Jeff Cowie BIO

Jeff Cowie is a Tony Award-winning scenic designer with an impressive list of credits on Broadway and beyond. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Cowie attended the University of Maryland before earning his MFA in design from the Yale School of Drama.


Cowie made his Broadway debut in 1995 with the Tony-nominated production of "The Heiress" starring Cherry Jones. He went on to design the sets for a number of Broadway productions, including "The Last Night of Ballyhoo," "Golden Child," "The Civil War," "The Smell of the Kill," and "The Crucible." In 2005, Cowie won a Tony Award for his work on "The Pillowman," a dark comedy by Martin McDonagh.
Outside of Broadway, Cowie has designed sets for numerous productions at regional theaters across the country, including the Guthrie Theater, the Mark Taper Forum, the La Jolla Playhouse, and the American Conservatory Theater. He has also worked extensively in opera and dance, designing sets for the Metropolitan Opera, the San Francisco Opera, the Houston Grand Opera, and the New York City Ballet.
In addition to his work in theater, Cowie has also designed sets for film and television. He received an Emmy nomination for his work on the HBO film "The Laramie Project," and has designed sets for the films "The Ice Storm," "The Notorious Bettie Page," and "The Namesake."
Cowie's most recent Broadway credit is the 2019 revival of "Betrayal," starring Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox, and Zawe Ashton. The production, directed by Jamie Lloyd, received critical acclaim for its minimalist design and innovative use of video projections.
