TWFest Opens This Month With Stella Shouting Contest Fundraiser


The Tennessee Williams & New Orleans Literary Festival will return to the historic French Quarter for its 37th annual celebration of contemporary literature, theatre, New Orleans culture, and, of course, Tennessee Williams. Kicking off on Sunday, March 19 with a new twist on the beloved Stella Shouting Contest, this year's Festival is filled with new partnerships, expanded programming, and award-winning speakers, alongside fresh new voices on the literary scene.

From May 16 to 27, The Negro Ensemble Company, Inc. will present the world premiere production of 'Hercules Didn't Wade in the Water' by Michael A Jones.  The play is winner of the troupe's 2017 Emerging Playwrights Competition.  Called a 'drama with comedy,' it is a story of displacement of Black families and the forces that lead to it in modern America.  Performances are at Theatre 80 St. Marks, 80 St. Marks Place.

The Brick Theater presents the world premiere of PLUTO (no longer a play), the latest from New York-based collective Superhero Clubhouse and the final installment of their Planet Plays series. PLUTO tackles the subject of mass extinction as three humans attempt to give a presentation about the remains of a play that no longer exists. The fragments seem to suggest the story of a unicorn, a hunter, and a wizard, all struggling to adapt to a rapidly changing world. Facing similar dilemmas, the three humans reenact their findings, searching for hope among the bones.

Tiffany Mann, Kyle Taylor Parker, & David Rowen Lead JOYFUL, JOYFUL Remake for Social Change


David Rowen, producer of YouTube series davidrowen/creative, assembled a diverse group of Broadway/theatre performers to remake and put a spin on the classic gospel medley, 'Joyful, Joyful,' from the Whoopi Goldberg and Lauryn Hill film, Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. The video is the creative element of a larger project to promote positive social change, and to raise awareness and charity for Teen and Police Service (TAPS) Academy, which is a program that connects at-risk youth and law enforcement to build trust and understanding between the two groups.
