THE MIRACLE WORKER - Prime Stage Theatre

Prime Stage is holding open auditions for The Miracle Worker, inspirational true story of Annie Sullivan’s journey toward unlocking Helen Keller’s world through language as the Keller family hopes for a miracle.

The director, Dr. Wayne Brinda will be casting roles available for non-Equity children and adults based on the description with the script and listed below. Please note that Prime Stage follows age-appropriate and color conscious casting.

Auditions will be held on Saturday, August 26 from 1 to 5pm and Sunday August 27 from 6 to 9pm at the Prime Stage Studio located at 840 W. Sawmill Run Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15220

Time Commitment:
Rehearsals will begin on Sunday September 24 at the Prime Stage studio. Rehearsals on Wednesday thru Friday nights and on weekend days.

Performances: Previews November 3 with performances at 7:30pm Fri/Sat evenings and 2:30pm Sun afternoons) at the Hazlett Theater Center for Performing Arts on the North Side. There will be several school student matinee performances at 10:00am along with our sensory-inclusive performance on Saturday November 11 at 2:30pm

All actors, including those auditioning for Helen Keller, should prepare two contrasting one-to-two-minute dramatic monologues.

Everyone auditioning should bring a headshot, a resume and will complete a list of any conflicts for late September, October. and early November at the auditions.

List of roles to be cast:

Annie Sullivan:
Playing age 20 years old. From Boston, she is the teacher of Helen Keller. A strong and vibrant woman who is determined and courageous yet haunted by her past.

Helen Keller:
Playing age 8 and 10. Became blind and deaf as an infant. Curious, intelligent, and wants to know. She is involved during intense physical scenes that will be choreographed by a certified fight director.

Kate Keller:
Playing mid 30’s. Raised in the deep South, she is the second wife of Captain Keller who is 20 years older than her. Helen’s loving mother, she is devoted and yearns to have hope as she coddles Helen. Speaks with a Southern dialect.

Captain Keller:
Playing 50’s. A former Confederate Army Captain, he is a Southern gentleman, a plantation owner, and proud editor of a local newspaper. He is stern and devoted to his family. Helen’s father and the father of James (from his first marriage). Speaks with a Southern dialect.

James Keller:
Playing early 20’s. Oldest child of Captain Keller, stepson of Kate Keller. Sarcastic wit, and resentful of the attention Helen gets so he remains distant from his father and Kate, his stepmother. Speaks with a Southern dialect.

Aunt Ev:
Playing age 50’s to 60’s. As Helen’s aunt and Captain’s older sister, she is talkative, opinionated and committed to the South. Speaks with a Southern dialect.

Viney:
Playing age 40’s to 60’s. A proud woman of color, she is the Keller family trusted servant. Funny, opinionated, cheerful who loves Helen and Kate. Speaks with a Southern dialect.

Martha:
Playing age 8 to 11 years old. A young actress of color, she is a playmate of Helen. Speaks with a Southern dialect.

Percy:
Playing age 10-12 years old. A young actor of color, he is a playmate of Helen.
Speaks with a Southern dialect.

Dr. Anagnos:
Playing age 50’s. Head of the Perkins School for the Blind. Compassionate and understanding of Anne. Speaks with a Greek dialect.
