KUMANANA: AN AFRO-PERUVIAN MUSICAL REVUE! - GALA Hispanic Theatre

KUMANANA AUDITION & WORKSHOP POSTING

DESCRIPTION/DESCRIPCIÓN

GALA Hispanic Theatre will be holding a workshop and audition for local union and non-union actors for an upcoming production of Kumanana! An Afro-Peruvian Musical Revue, an original musical revue about how siblings Victoria and Nicomedes Santa Cruz influenced Afro-Peruvian culture, told through their writings, music, and poetry. This world premiere production will be directed by GALA’s Artistic Director Hugo Medrano with choreography and associate direction by Luis Sandoval from Lima, Peru.

In 1959, Victoria and Nicomedes Santa Cruz spearheaded a revival of the Afro Peruvian music, dance, theatre and poetry during the 1960s and 70s. Through a process of “recovering the ancestral memory”, as Victoria characterized it, she discovered the rhythm in her own body, and revived longtime forgotten genres and artistic expressions of her cultural heritage. Additionally, this cultural movement united Afro- Peruvian artists and the community at large.
