QUEEN CITY THEATRE COMPANY HOLDS NON-EQUITY AUDITIONS FOR

Abraham Lincoln’s Big, Gay Dance Party

Queen City Theatre Company announces non-Equity auditions for the first show of their 6th season: Abraham Lincoln’s Big, Gay Dance Party by Aaron Loeb. Auditions will be held Friday July 13th from 7pm – 9pm, and Saturday July 14th from 2pm-4pm at the Clayworks Studio at Spirit Square (345 N College St. - Charlotte, NC).

Aaron Loeb’s hysterical comedy, Abraham Lincoln’s Big, Gay Dance Party is about Illinois schoolteacher Harmony Green who has told her fourth grade class that Menard County’s most beloved homegrown hero, Abraham Lincoln, was gay. When Honest Abe is “outed” in a re-imagined Christmas pageant, controversy and chaos engulf the town. As the trial of the century begins, big city reports and Congressional candidates descend, and family skeletons are forced out of the closet. Top hats and beards abound in this hilarious, poignant, and timely look at prejudice past and present. In keeping with the spirit of democracy, the play is in three acts, but the audience chooses how the acts are put together and in what order they go. Each of the characters play Abraham Lincoln at one point in the show, and music and dance take center stage in this campy yet sociopolitical comedy.

Queen City Theatre Company’s production of Abraham Lincoln’s Big, Gay Dance Party will be directed by Glenn T. Griffin, and performances will take place from August 16th thru August 25th.

THE CAST

The cast consists of 3 females and 4 males. The entire cast is an ensemble, with each actor playing more than one role.

The Cast of Characters for Abraham Lincoln’s Big Gay Dance Party are:

Tom (40’s or 50’s): Menard County’s conservative District Attorney, former Congressman, and father to Jerry. Tom believes his home is under attack by radicals and he will do anything to protect the lifestyle of rural Illinois. Tom is a legend in repose, having been instrumental in the recovery of Republican power in Illinois in the post-Daley years. He hasn’t done much lately. This role also doubles as Walter and Abraham Lincoln.

Jerry (20’s): Young, gorgeous guy from rural Illinois. The kind of guy who wears long johns under a plaid shirt. Jerry protects the image of a good ole boy from farm country, but there’s something a little too meticulous about the way he’s put together, something effeminate: He appears to have actual human feelings, a genuine no no. Also doubles as Bailiff, Sparky, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln.

Anton (40’s): Pulitzer Prize winning reporter. Anton is so smooth cigarettes smoke him to look cool. Anton is in his 40’s, has never settled down with anyone or anything, and leads a fabulous life. Always impeccably d dressed. Also doubles as the Judge and Abraham Lincoln.

Esmerelda (late 30’s or 40’s): A larger than life woman. She is one of those women adventurous young girls aspire to be. She doesn’t not care what others say or think. She has done it all, and anything she hasn’t done yet, there is no doubt she’ll get to. Esmerelda wears wild outfits that say Kate Hepburn meets Amelia Earhart: riding jodhpurs and thigh high boots; safari gear, sharp tweed suits. Also doubles as Regina and Abraham Lincoln.

Harmony (20’s or 30’s): A schoolteacher in Menard County, Harmony is a left-wing liberal with extremely progressive politics and lifestyle. She has kept this secret for most of her life in Menard County because she knows people would not appreciate it. Sadly, she is no in the spotlight and cannot hide any longer. Also doubles as Jerry’s Mom and Abraham Lincoln.

Lloyd: (20’s or 30’s): A political operative from Washington, Lloyd is the kind of guy who knows where the bodies are buried. He’s a string-puller and a dealmaker. He oozes charm, even when he’s being a jerk. He seems perpetually amused. Also doubles as Principle, Timmy, and Abraham Lincoln.

Tina (20’s or 30’s): Regina’s legislative aide. An up-and-coming operative in the party, believes Regina is a rising star and she intends to hitch her wagon to that star. Also doubles as Violet, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln.
