What did our critic think of SISTER ACT at Theatre Memphis? For those of an older generation, did you ever look back at sitcoms from the 1970’s and wish they were set to music? Did you ever wish Fred Sanford (from “Sanford and Son”) or Squiggy (from “Laverne and Shirley) broke out into song to better share their deeper wants and desires?

30 years after its stage debut, experiencing MISS SAIGON nowadays exposes just how outdated and out-of-touch it is with our increasingly diverse world view. The musical's original production---which first debuted in the West End in 1989 before transferring to Broadway in 1991---became a global hit despite some loud, very understandable controversy. Most audiences, however, ignored the accusations of orientalism, misogyny, and white-washing and instead focused on the show's epic melodrama and theatrical splendor, much of it powered by the lush music of Claude-Michel Schönberg and the lyrics by Alain Boublil and Richard Maltby Jr. The show continues at Orange County's Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa through October 13, 2019.
Riker's Island is New York City's notorious jail complex. 85% of the inmates have not been convicted of a crime. Unable to post bail, many defendants are incarcerated until their trial. The rest of the population are convicted criminals serving short sentences. Richard L. Roy tells his own story in A White Man's Guide to Riker's Island.
It's a razzling, dazzling experience!

The tragic events surrounding the rise of the Khmer Rouge regime in mid-70's Cambodia serves as the overarching backdrop that links the past and the (near) present in Lauren Yee's stunning new play CAMBODIAN ROCK BAND---which continues its World Premiere production at Orange County's Tony Award-winning regional theatre South Coast Repertory in Costa Mesa through March 25, 2018. Commissioned by SCR as part of its CrossRoads Initiative, this powerful and searing new drama---sprinkled with welcome bits of comedy and, yes, rock concert music interludes---had its initial staged reading at last year's Pacific Playwright's Festival and is now an absorbing, full-fledged production under the admirable direction of Chay Yew.

Meant as an introductory reading on the wiles of the most recognized names in high finance, Winston Overtons minces no words and pulls no punches in exposing what is rotten at the heart of Wall Street Institutions in 'Wall Street Scandals.' Overton, an insider who worked on the trading floor since the '70s, presents the mechanics of greed that provides motivation for financial institutions' reason for being. Eye-opening and educational, this book gives broad coverage on the whys and wherefores of this bastion of the imminent demise of capitalism. It is in answer to the need for the public to be informed about the imbalances that brought about the failing economy and consequent protests such as the Occupy Wall Street movement.
