The Paris Combo Brings Their Jaunty Cosmopolitan Sound To The Harris Center
by A.A. Cristi - Dec 4, 2018

"A French quintet with a seemingly endless supply of catchy hooks and imaginative lyrics" (Variety), the Paris Combo has spent two decades traveling the globe, playing to enthusiastic audiences from Sydney to San Francisco and Berlin to Beijing. Theirs is a unique, cosmopolitan sound; a fun-loving mix of swinging gypsy jazz, cabaret, French pop, and Latino and Middle Eastern rhythms. Fronted by the charismatic vocals of Belle du Berry whose "onstage demeanor is so expressive that communication is never an issue… part gamine charm, part playful seduction, her delivery fuses theatrical instincts with jazz-inflected phrasing that accentuates the band's irresistible rhythmic and melodic hooks" (The Age, Melbourne 2017).

BWW Review: ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST at Playhouse On Park
by Joseph Harrison - Nov 6, 2018

It's a funny thing when a piece transcends its given medium and becomes ingrained in pop culture. People who have never seen a certain play/read the book/watched the movie find themselves familiar enough with the plot or the characters without ever really experiencing the piece in its entirety. For me, this has been the case for ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST a story that was first told via the acclaimed novel by Ken Kesey, then the adaptation for the stage by Dale Wasserman, then the Academy Award winning film by Milos Forman. I had some familiarity with the plot and characters, but somehow, I was never exposed to it completely, and so it was with a fairly blank slate (those pop culture staples notwithstanding) that I approached Playhouse on Park's latest production.

There is something thrilling about discovering the backstory behind a treasured book, film or play. Learning about the origins of a favorite character or the life lessons gained long before they were introduced to you is a special thrill. This unique type of discovery, telling the tale of Peter Pan before he became the boy who would not grow up, is being brought to boisterous life in Playhouse on Park's inaugural production of their 10th season, Rick Elice's PETER AND THE STARCATCHER.

by Macon Prickett - Jun 1, 2018

Oh, how fast the years have gone by. On this very day, Armada Music can look back on 15 years of quality dance music across the board, and they've decided to celebrate it in style with the release of a brand-new, 4CD compilation album: 'Armada 15 Years'.

The Kitchen Announces Spring 2018 Season
by A.A. Cristi - Mar 22, 2018

The Kitchen, founded in 1971, has continued to serve as an important catalyst for a broad community of groundbreaking artists working across disciplines. In today's landscape, where contemporary artists and arts institutions are collaborating in new ways and generating new contexts for the continuing evolution of multi-disciplinary art, The Kitchen, as a nimble, smaller-scale organization, plays an especially vital role. It provides emerging and established artists a hot-house environment for the presentation and discussion of their work, supporting and seeking to foster a vibrant, living dialogue among artists from every field and area of culture. Engaging both The Kitchen veterans and newcomers who challenge the given formations of art and politics, lifestyle and social structures, the Spring 2018 (March 28-July 27) season probes everything from the police state to the racial imaginary to self-construction and identity, utilizing the flexibility of the institution's spaces for art that itself eludes definition.

The Kitchen Presents Marianna Ellenberg's PAWEL & EBOLA
by Julie Musbach - Jan 25, 2018

The Kitchen presents Marianna Ellenberg's Pawel & Ebola, a new play that tells the story of the imagined offspring of neurologist and famed hysteric -photographer Dr. Jean-Martin Charcot in order to examine trauma and how notions of hysteria have been projected onto women from fin-de-si cle France to contemporary America (February 22 24). This is the largest onstage undertaking yet for Ellenberg: the film and performance artist sets her cinematic taste for camp and psychodrama onstage in this full-length, time-traversing play. Combining narrative and fragmentary text, dance, live audio experimentation and electro-acoustic music, Pawel & Ebola continues Ellenberg's deconstruction of themes like institutional misogyny, spirituality, and the female subject in American mythologies. This trenchant riff on various power structures asks how the global capitalist societies of today can contort even feminism to exploitative ends.
