Pacific Symphony Orchestra’s semi-staged version of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata (The Lost One) was filmed at Segerstrom Concert Hall in Costa Mesa, CA. This opera’s title role requires a charismatic soprano and a consummate actress who can pull the audience into the opera’s stark drama. Cecilia Violetta Lopez proved to be that kind of artist.

Pacific Symphony Presents LA TRAVIATA Reimagined

How do you stage an opera that's a love story without the characters making any physical contact? That was stage director Robert Neu's challenge when Carl St.Clair contacted him last winter about collaborating on a production of Verdi's “La Traviata” that takes into account the complicated covid-19 protocols necessary to perform during this unprecedented time.

Pacific Symphony Ravel Presents The Magical One-Act Opera, THE CHILD & THE MAGIC SPELLS

Unleash your inner-child as Pacific Symphony offers another unique concert experience, with a double-bill of both Prokofiev's symphonic fairy tale "Peter & The Wolf" and Ravel's one-act opera "L'enfant et les sortileges." No stranger to producing elaborate and magical stagings, Robert Neu is once again the stage director, returning after his fantastic work on "The Magic Flute." (He will return next season to direct Verdi's "Otello"!) Longtime artistic partner Pacific Chorale, led by Artistic Director Robert Istad, will join the Symphony on stage again, as well as the CSUF Singers and Southern California Children's Chorus. Returning mezzo-soprano Tess Altiveros plays the lead role, "The Child," in Ravel's "L'enfant."

Pacific Symphony will celebrate Carl St.Clair's 30th year as music director of the orchestra and pays homage to Beethoven to honor the 250th anniversary of the great composer's birth. This landmark season commences on Thursday, Sept. 26 with Maestro St.Clair conducting the combined forces of Pacific Symphony and Pacific Chorale in a program featuring two great blockbusters: Beethoven's Choral Fantasy, a forerunner to his mighty Ninth Symphony along with Carl Orff's popular masterpiece Carmina Burana, the most frequently performed choral work of the 21st century.

BWW Review: Only One Weekend Left to See Skylark Opera Theatre's Beautifully Moving Contemporary Opera AS ONE

The new incarnation of Skylark Opera Theatre, under new Artistic Director Robert Neu, is presenting their third work of accessible, intimate opera. As someone who usually stays on the musical theater side of the music-theater spectrum, this approach seems like a good one for me, sort of bridging that gap between opera and music theater. After last year's stripped down adaptation of CARMEN and an immersive DON GIOVANNI, they're now presenting a contemporary opera about a very timely subject. AS ONE is a two-person 90-minute English language opera about Hannah, a transgender woman becoming herself. She is played by both a man and a woman, pre- and post-transition. It's a beautiful, heart-breaking, inspirational, ultimately hopeful story gorgeously told through music. The intimate new space that is North Garden Theater, in St. Paul's West 7th neighborhood, is the perfect location to experience this sparse-in-spectacle but rich-in-substance opera. But act fast - only three more performances remain this weekend.
