Review: THE TEMPEST, Shakespeare's Globe

Love Island meets Below Deck in Benidorm in this OTT aestival pastiche. Prospero dons a speedo. Questionable tattoos cover a few of the cast. The most unpredictable of twists stretches the limits of copyright infringement. It’s absolutely bonkers, but it works! Holmes delivers a modern, refreshing, and unconventional take.

BWW Review: VALUED FRIENDS, Rose Theatre

Our national obsession with property prices has a long history. Back in 1989, Stephen Jeffreys targeted the seismic social and financial changes of the decade with his play Valued Friends. A caustic commentary on Thatcher's Britain and the explosion of property prices, it was a hit when it premiered in 1989 at the Hampstead Theatre and earned Jeffreys Most Promising Playwright awards from both the Critics' Circle and Evening Standard. Michael Fentiman's brand new production at Kingston's Rose Theatre is the first revival of the play in thirty years and bristles with nostalgia, yet lacks real substance.

BWW Review: TIMON OF ATHENS, RSC Swan Theatre

Timon of Athens, at times a clunky collaboration and a clunkier mix of verse and prose, has much to say about how money corrupts and how spoiling adults is about as advisable as spoiling children. There's something of King Lear about it - but probably not enough.

BWW Review: KING LEAR, Shakespeare's Globe

Nancy Meckler makes her Globe debut with the penultimate show of the season, a well-known tragedy to contrast with recent comedies: King Lear. It casts a darker shadow over the Summer of Love, looking more at familial love and various struggles for power.
