Mikhail Fiksel is a sound designer, musician, composer and a DJ based in NYC and Chicago. Originally from Siberia, Russia, Fiksel’s work has been heard on various stages, movie screens and dance floors around the US and beyond. Recent theatre work include projects with Playwrights Horizons, Manhattan Theatre Club, 2nd Stage, The Pearl, The Flea, En Garde Arts, American Conservatory Theatre, The Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, St. Louis Repertory, Dallas Theatre Center, The Old Globe, Cleveland Playhouse, Redmoon, The Geffen Playhouse, The Long Wharf Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Victory Gardens, Albany Park Theatre Project, Writers Theatre, Timeline, The Hypocrites, The House Theater and many others. Other work include dance compositions and designs with Lucky Plush, The Seldoms, The Inconvenience, The Cambrians and Chicago Danceworks and original scores for several independent feature films, including THE WISE KIDS and GLITCH.
He is a recipient of the Lucille Lortel Award and The Garland Award his sound design of THE ELABORATE ENTRANCE OF CHAD DEITY (2nd Stage Theater Company and The Geffen Playhouse) and multiple Joseph Jefferson Awards for Sound Design and Original Incidental Music. In 2011, he was awarded the Michael Maggio Emerging Designer Award. He has written original scores for several musicals, including OLD TOWN (with Brett Neveu, Strawdog) for which he received a 2008 AfterDark Award for Best Original Score and LAST OF THE DRAGONS (with David Bareford, Lifeline), published by Playscripts, Inc.
He is a member of 2nd Story and an Artistic Associate with Teatro Vista, Timeline and Redmoon Theatre. In addition, he is a resident artist at Adventure Stage Chicago and Albany Park Theatre Project and was on the faculty at Loyola University’s Department of Fine and Performing Arts and University of Chicago’s Theater and Performance Studies.
Outside of theatre stages he can be found playing with his nu-jazz ensemble Seeking Wonderland and the dynamic dj duo The Ordeal, or as a solo performer, sometimes under the monikers DJ White Russian or The Red Menace. He splits his time between Chicago and New York and building a jetpack to make his commute more manageable.
