Some of the rising stars of Irish opera return to Cork for a special Valentine's Night presentation of Bizet's classic, La tragédie de Carmen. The abridged and semi-staged opera will be performed as part of Cork Opera House's Winter Season and will feature Cork mezzo-soprano Niamh O'Sullivan, Clare tenor Dean Power as Don José, Dublin bass-baritone Rory Dunne and Wexford soprano Kelli-Ann Masterson.

Audiences are invited to experience live opera once again when Utah Opera produces Peter Brook's “La tragédie de Carmen” at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre in downtown Salt Lake City.

Utah Opera Artistic Director Christopher McBeth today announced Utah Opera’s 2021-22 season, sponsored by the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. In its upcoming season, Utah Opera presents four full-scale opera productions with live performances at the Janet Quinney Lawson Capitol Theatre.

Peter Brook's 1981 “La tragédie de Carmen” (The Tragedy of Carmen) is more than a shorter, recut version of Bizet's “Carmen.” While it pares the cast down to four singers, accompanied by a chamber orchestra, and is filled with musical passages from Bizet's famous opera, La Tragédie is a nearly complete reworking of the story focused on the intense interactions and tragedy of the four central characters.

Conductor George Rothman will lead Riverside Symphony in an adventurous program today evening, January 26, at Alice Tully Hall. The orchestra's principal trombonist, Michael Lormand, will be featured in Romanian-French master Marius Constant's Gli Elementi, a gripping essay for solo trombone presented for the first time on an American stage. A rare performance of Mozart's Divertimento K. 251 for strings, solo oboe and two horns offers up a depth of expression not often associated with the form, while Dvorak student (and eventual son-in-law) Josef Suk's captivating string serenade completes this wide-ranging journey through the centuries.

Riverside Symphony will launch a new season of premieres, rarities, and beloved classics at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center on Friday evening, November 16. Under the baton of founding Music Director, George Rothman, the orchestra's 2018-19 New York season will commence with a chamber orchestra program featuring the New York premiere of Stephen Hartke's Ship of State with pianist Xak Bjerken in his New York concerto debut. Hartke has been a mainstay of Riverside Symphony's contemporary programming over the years, a relationship memorialized in the orchestra's critically acclaimed recording of this distinguished American composer's Symphony No. 2 and Violin Concerto, "Auld Swaara." Franz Schreker's stunning Chamber Symphony-rarely performed despite its almost cult-like following-and Weill's Little Threepenny Music complete the program.

Opera return this autumn with a reimagining of Bizet's famous masterpiece La Tragedie de Carmen. In 1981 Peter Brook collaborated with composer Marius Constant to reimagine this emotive opera and, now, Opera will stage this stripped back incarnation. Sung in French with Opera's signature 'silent movie' captions in English, this dark and thrilling piece may not always be as you expect.

Peter Brook's pared down LA TRAGEDIE DE CARMEN is perfect for Opera in the Heights, but it lacks the magic and richness of Georges Bizet's CARMEN. However, if you combine all that is good about Brook's LA TRAGEDIE DE CARMEN with the talented cast and crew of Opera in the Heights, you have a good time on your hands.

This evening, February 7, George Rothman and Riverside Symphony will present the second installment of the orchestra's Alice Tully Hall season.
