Palo Alto Players continues its 2018-19 season with the Peninsula premiere of Lee Hall's stage adaptation of Tom Stoppard and Marc Norman's 1998 Oscar-winning film, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE.  Set against the backdrop of mistaken identity, ruthless scheming, and backstage theatrics, the romantic romp imagines the fictional love affair between William Shakespeare and the woman that inspires him to write his first great masterpiece.  SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE is directed by Theatre Bay Area Award-winning director Lee Ann Payne (Palo Alto Players' The Laramie Project), and features a cast of 21 local Bay Area actors.  SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE runs January 18 through February 3 at the Lucie Stern Theater, 1305 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.  For information or tickets, visit paplayers.org or call 650.329.0891.

SONGS FOR A NEW WORLD is a musical theatre piece by Jason Robert Brown. Originally produced Off-Broadway at the WPA Theatre in 1995, this was Jason Robert Brown's first produced show. It is neither a book musical or a revue and has been called a 'song cycle', which was put together out of songs he had written for other venues and events. I was very much struck by the fact that many of these songs sounded like they could fit into his latter shows such as 'The Last Five Years' or 'Parade'. In the final analysis, calling this a musical is a stretch. What it all boils down to is a series of songs very loosely connected by the theme: 'the moment of decision.'

DURANG DURANG, written by the historical theatre writer/director/actor Christopher Durang, is a farce presented by Oh Dragon Theatre Company. Directed by Dillon Yruegas, presents a creatively staged and lively cast of players to a curious group of onlookers trying to piece together what the collection of stories and scenes mean. True to the theatre company's message of "creating authentic performance in both new and classic works…", DURANG DURANG does not disappoint. The writing style of Christopher Durang is a key element in bringing his plays to life, specifically within the genre of comedy. In the unconventional type of story telling that theater-goers expect from Mr. Durang, this show uses a collection of explosive parody and entertaining scenes, which are presented through farce and energetic execution by the cast. The scenes consist of 6 short one-acts presented with the solid 7 players. They represent unapologetic theatrical references that theatre fans will enjoy - understanding the punchline to the inside jokes. The endearing and exasperating scenes help some members shine and leave others trying to stay afloat. This cheerfully profane and crass comedy will confuse and excite the audience members trying to make sense of the farce.

Ground Floor Theatre, Central Texas' newest theatre company announces its inaugural production, a concert version of the hit musical PARADE with book by Alfred Uhry  and music/lyrics by Jason Robert Brown, December 3-5 at 8:00 pm with a Saturday matinee at 2pm at Ground Floor Theatre, located at 979 Springdale Road in Austin at the corner of Springdale and Airport Boulevard.  

John Barrowman is a Scottish-American actor, singer, dancer, host and writer who has both British and American citizenship. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1975. His first big break was as Billy Crocker in Cole Porter's Anything Goes on London's West End. His most recent West End credit was in the 2009 production of La Cage aux Folles. To American audiences, he is primarily known for his TV work playing Captain Jack Harkness on Doctor Who and Torchwood. He is also openly gay.

In the household of Olivia, two campaigns are being quietly waged - one by the lovesick lord Orsino against the heart of the indifferent Olivia; the other by an alliance of servants and hangers-on against the high-handedness of her steward, the pompous Malvolio. Filled with a cast of unforgettable characters, Twelfth Night combines mistaken identity, high comedy, dynamic narrative, witty invention and the pangs of unrequited love with some of the most exquisite language Shakespeare ever wrote. The production runs through June 22, and plays Thursday - Saturday 8:00 pm. Sunday 5:30 pm.

The City Theatre Company will kick off the 2014 summer theatre season with William Shakespeare's wonderful romantic comedy Twelfth Night, or What You Will.
