The Good Theater opens its 21st season with a luminous production of Matthew Barber’s poignant 2017 play about the flickers of late-life romance, expertly directed by Brian P. Allen, starring Valerie Perri in a nuanced, delicate and incandescent performance. FIREFLIES, as the title and central metaphor suggest, draws a subtle portrait of the sparks that simmer repressed in a lonely woman’s soul, only to be kindled by the attentions of an erratic, but appealing drifter who comes into her life and enables her to shake off decades of claustrophobic expectations.   Barber draws his four characters with great insight and empathy, and though the ending may be fated from the start, keeps the audience guessing as to the directions the principal pair will choose.  His dialogue is wry, laced with a warm wit and tender pathos, and he manages to infuse every moment of the week-long action with palpable emotion.

Love Loss and What I Wore by Nora Ephron and Deliah Ephron is returning to Good Theater for 12 performances starting January 19 and continuing through February 9.  This production was a huge hit last winter for Good Theater, the professional company in residence at the St. Lawrence Arts Center, 76 Congress Street, Portland.  Love Loss and What I Wore runs in and around Good Theater's main stage production of An Act of God by David Javerbaum.

For the second offering of the Good Theater's ambitious 2018-2019 season and its one hundredth production in the company's existence, Brian P. Allen has mounted the world premiere of a new play by Maine writer Karmo Sanders. Homer Bound is a rollicking, folksy comedy populated by loveable characters and guaranteed to have the audience split its sides with laughter. Directed with panache by Sally Wood and performed by six excellent actors, Homer Bound is a romp from start to finish!

Good Theater will present the world premiere of Homer Bound by Maine playwright Karmo Sanders, opening November 7 and playing through December 2. Set on a small fishing island off the Maine coast, Homer Bound deals with a shotgun wedding. Who will arrive first - the minister or the baby?

Good Theater on Tour is bringing three of its productions to the Nasson Little Theatre in Springvale this summer. Underwaterguy, Love Letters and Love Loss and What I Wore will all play the beautifully renovated theater with two performances of each production.

The last offering in the Good Theater's current season is cause for celebration! Ken Ludwig's 2015 comedy, A Comedy of Tenors, serves up a frothy concoction of revolving door farce, sophisticated irony and broad parody, witty double entendres, and a breathlessly wacky plot line that makes the evening speed by joyously.

Good Theater tops the mystery theater genre with a production of Shear Madness

Good Theater is proud to bring back Shear Madness for another extended run beginning January 10 and continuing for nine weeks through March 11. Shear Madness proved to be the best selling show in Good Theater's history during its original run in 2016.

Good Theater the professional company in residence at the St. Lawrence Arts Center, 76 Congress Street, Portland, will open its next main stage production, THE MAY QUEEN on January 25.  In addition the company will present three performances per week of A.R. Gurney's LOVE LETTERS.  From January 25-February 26, the company will offer 33 days of continuous theater giving nine performances per week.

A two character play in which the actors sit behind a desk and read from letters for eighty minutes poses a series of challenges to any director. What is it then that makes Brian P. Allen's new production of A.R. Gurney's 1989 drama, Love Letters, so completely mesmerizing? Not only is Gurney's writing poetic and poignant, but the production, which opened at Portland's Good Theater this past week starring Kathleen Kimball and Brian Allen (his role later assumed by Tony Reilly and then Steve Underwood), is so perfectly calibrated, so subtly interiorized that it resembles a fine chamber music performance.

Good Theater, the professional theater company in residence at the St. Lawrence Arts Center, will kick off its 15th Anniversary Season with the Portland premiere of the 2013 Tony Award winning Best Play, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike by Christopher Durang and directed by Good Theater's Artistic Director, Brian P. Allen  The show will begin on Wednesday October 19 and play for five weeks through Sunday November 20 for a total of 30 performances.

Another chapter in the thirty-seven year history of Paul Portner's interactive comedy, Shear Madness, has opened on the stage of Portland's Good Theater, and the side-splittingly funny, quick-paced murder mystery which Brian P. Allen and his excellent cast serve up is not to be missed!
