What did our critic think? If you don't have cable, watch SpongeBob Squarepants nor any clue why SpongeBob should be a Broadway musical, no worries. Everything is made clear for those entering Bikini Bottom for the first time. It's packed with family theater elements: bright colors, important themes, messages of friendship, catchy tunes and slapstick comedy. Best day ever!

Many of my readers know my connection with MAMMA MIA! on Broadway (see my bio below). When I saw many months ago that Toby's Dinner Theatre in Columbia would be presenting it (the professional regional premiere) I knew it would be a money maker and knew, after seeing many Toby productions, it would be done well. Well, not only have they done well, this edition of MAMMA MIA! is just plain superb.
Musical theatre is about happy endings: if you like them, see MAMMA MIA!, at Toby's through September 9th. Heather Marie Beck and Maggie Dransfield as mother and daughter Donna and Sophie Sheridan are delightful and heartwarming. Disco, universally accepted as delicious, is the keystone of this show, whether or not you love or have heard of ABBA. In today's tumult, an escape to a tropical paradise where conflict stems from wedding angst and family drama seems a wonderful notion.
Cockpit In Court Summer Theatre kicks off its Forty-Fifth season with style. The main stage theatre will be named after founding Artistic Director, F. Scott Black, in June. To honor this event, F Scott Black is directing the classic dark comedy Arsenic and Old Lace, in the main stage theatre. This will be the first play on the main stage at Cockpit in Court patrons have been able to see in years. Individual tickets are $22 adults, $20 senior adults, and $14 for students and Children 12 & under. Performances are June 9th through June 25th.
Ready for a brand new beat? Columbia has late night entertainment. This Today, August 26th, Toby's Dinner Theatre will host the second of a series, The MAIN Thing: Cabaret, in support of EC Partnership which is organized to help rebuild Ellicott City after the July 30th flood.
