WOMEN'S PROJECT PIPELINE FESTIVAL 2024 SEASON

SEEKING:

MALICIOUS COMPLIANCE

by Amara Janae Brady

directed by Julia Sirna Frest

produced by Praycious Wilson Gay

1st Rehearsal: 3/19/2024

Runs: 4/4/2024 - 4/6/2024

SYNOPSIS:

Mo and Yuri sit under an almost non-existent potted tree named Beckett, waiting impatiently for the next phase of their career—the next part of their journey. Delores sings a song about the blood the land craves, a callous warning that the blood is the only thing that will allow them to ascend to the glory Mo and Yuri believe is possible. Inspired by Waiting for Godot, Malicious Compliance tells the story of two artists desperately waiting for a change that may cost more than they’re willing to give, or worse may never come.

DELORES: Open gender. Ageless theatrical gatekeeper. Witchy and haunting. Used to getting what they want. Was once full of life, verve, and a strong moral compass. Has since been broken by the system she’s been charged to take care of.

MO: Queer woman, femme of center. Mid-20s- Early 30s. A writer who tries to avoid the distractions of life and the desolation she is currently experiencing in the woods. Our reluctant change maker.

YURI/SCARECROW: Non-binary person, masc of center. Mid-20s- Early 30s. As Yuri, an actor in the same section of the woods as Mo. Constantly encourages her to experience some semblance of life outside her work. Excited to move to the next stage of the woods but lost on how to get there. As the Scarecrow, a pawn of Delores. Desperate and willing to do anything to move forward, even kill for it.

OK

by Christin Eve Cato

directed by Jordana De La Cruz

produced by Barbara Samuels

1st Rehearsal: 3/26/2024

Runs: 4/11/2024 - 4/13/2024

SYNOPSIS:

A cast and crew of Latine performers prepare for a non-union bilingual production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma, playing at a regional theater in Oklahoma. When one of the leads discovers she is pregnant and gets her abortion appointment canceled, they band together as they navigate a post-Roe America. In their dialogue comes revelations about their careers, their personal lives, and their relationship with a society that has become desperate to discount their own humanity.

MELINDA, Latina, Dominican-American (second generation) mid 30s, a mid- career/professional performer in her prime. She's thoughtful and is a natural caretaker.

ELENA, Latina, Puerto Rican (from the Island), early 20s, a performer, a newbie, bushy tailed. She's passionate about her beliefs and loves a good time.

JOLIE, Afro-Latina, Nuyorican, mid 30s, a seasoned performer going through hormonal changes. She's an advocate and takes no bullshit.

ALEX: Identifies with all genders (some days connecting with one more than the others), possibly assigned/socialized male at birth. Late 20s, a stage manager/ damage controller. Takes their job seriously, a true professional- but who's compassionate. Both natural/subtle as the stage manager and BIG for the tarot cards (Double as three tarot cards: TWO OF SWORDS, THE EMPRESS, THE QUEEN OF PENTACLES. (card choice to be confirmed)).

MEN'S VOICES, 20s- middle aged. (pre-recorded, male, versatile voices/accents): GERALDO, FELIPE, HECTOR.

TEARS OF A MEGYN

by Queen Esther

dramaturged by Onyekachi Iwu

produced by Alverneq Lindsay

1st Rehearsal: 4/2/24

Runs: 4/18/2024 - 4/20/2024

SYNOPSIS:

A black comedy about blackface, white privilege and the police. While remaining roommates since their freshman year in a condo off-campus near the Ivy League school they attend (after working their way through academia to post-graduate status) Rashida comes home to find that Megyn has used Rashida’s makeup to create an iconic look – and win a popular Halloween costume contest. Hilarity ensues.

RASHIDA: (mid to late 20s, Black) Megyn’s roommate. Brown-skinned Black woman that’s relatively invisible, constantly underestimated, overworked, underpaid – and usually the smartest one in the room. She’s from The ATL but she grew up around wealthy white people so money doesn’t phase her.

MEGYN: (mid to late 20s – casting a Black woman to play a white woman playing a Black woman) Rashida’s roommate. She’s from Boston, she’s an only child and she’s a legacy student. She’s accessible, slightly drug-addled and way too much fun. Dizzyingly wealthy in a monied, blue-blood, old school way. (At least, her family is.)

CHAD: (mid to late 20s – casting a Black man to play a white man playing a Black man) Megyn’s boyfriend. He’s as smart as he has to be to do whatever he needs to do, to marry into the right family, work for the right company, live in the right neighborhood, do all the right things to have the right life. There’s just one problem.

OFFICER MCNAIR: (late 40s - early 50s, white) Racist. Ex-military. Tries to hide it by going by the book. Doesn’t consider himself to be racist at all. Voted for Trump.

OFFICER JOHNSON: (early to mid 30s, white) Racist. Ex-military. Doesn’t hide it at all. Has made it a hallmark of his career to be a habitual line stepper over that Thin Blue Line. Proud Boy.

WHEN THE OTHER MARY CELESTE SANK: A STRANGE AND UMWELTIAN TALE

by Amina Henry

1st Rehearsal: 4/9/24

Runs: 4/25/2024 - 4/27/2024

SYNOPSIS:

Marooned on the coast of an island after a shipwreck in 1894, five women must work together to survive in a strange, new world. As they hunt for food and water while battling the relentless insects, each woman develops a deeper understanding of what it means to be human. Some of the women want to build a boat so they can attempt to go home; others want to build a shelter in what they consider their inevitable new home. A conflict over a knife leads to a startling conclusion, one that causes nature itself to take notice. When The Other Mary Celeste Sank: An Umweltian Tale is a theatrical fairy tale that uses language to explore what it means to be brave, what it means to be strong, and what it means to human.
