PREPARATION
Prepare EITHER 1) 1 ½ minute contemporary/classical monologue for the plays or 2) For the Musical, a brief song that shows your range; or 3) A one minute monologue and 16 bars of a song if wished to audition for all shows. An accompanist will be provided on for all Calls. Please bring a photo and resume, stapled back-to-back

Character Breakdown
Diana (40 to 45, Female) Delusional, bipolar, and depressed. The sexiness of her yesterdays has only recently begun to soften. She is determined to make her family perfect but is tortured by a death in the family. Vocal range top: F#5/bottom: G3
Gabe (18 to 21, Male) Diana & Dan's son. Dashing, athletic, and bright. He is a playful man and everything a mother could imagine. Vocal range top: C5/bottom: B2
Dan (40 to 45, Male) Diana's husband. He is handsome and genuine. Though a constant in Diana's tumultuous life, he has grown tired and weary of her antics. Vocal range top: B4/bottom: Ab2
Natalie (16, Female) Diana & Dan's troubled daughter. An accomplished pianist and hardworking student, her struggles are exacerbated by her mother's behavior. She greatly admires Henry. Vocal range top: G5/bottom: G3
Henry (17, Male) Natalie's classmate. The all-around musician, philosopher, and slacker. He has an intoxicating capacity for sympathy and romance. Vocal range top: B4/bottom: G#2
Dr. Madden (30 to 40, Male) Diana's handsome psychiatrist. Quite assured in his practice and considered somewhat of a rock star. Vocal range top: A4/bottom: A2

All Performers must be strong singers and movers of highly skilled improvisational ability. We are seeking performers who can potentially play instruments such as a Female who can play the stride piano and females/males who can play harmonica, guitar, among others tbd. All performers must have dynamic, virtuosic rhythmic ability and be process driven.

Antigone/Ensemble (female, teens/early 20s): A young woman haunted by grief and trauma, she remains idealistic—but also proud, unyielding, and devoted to her beliefs with an almost prophetic righteousness. A person of deep feeling and startling intensity (think of Greta Thunberg’s speech at the UN), she is perhaps too in love with the idea of martyrdom. Motivated at all times by the absolute certainty that comes with youth.
Ismene/Ensemble (female, teens/early 20s): Antigone’s sister. Usually a cautious, sensible and moderate personality, she also has a certain emotional volatility. Though loyal to her sister, she too has suffered loss and hopes to avoid more, making her unwilling to risk challenging those in power. Later she becomes as eager to sacrifice herself as she once was anxious to stay out of trouble.
Kreon/Ensemble (male, 50s): A new king eager to reestablish order and consolidate power, inspiring extra vigilance and inflexibility. Valuing loyalty and obedience above all, he is given to fits of paranoia and rage, which he sometimes quickly masks with an offhand sardonic comment or flash of dark humor. He will not tolerate dissent, but when things go wrong he reveals a deeply sensitive man beneath the authoritarian exterior.
Haimon/Ensemble (male, teens/early 20s): Kreon’s son and Antigone’s betrothed, he has been a loyal and obedient subject until a profound injustice brings him to confront his father. Diplomatic at first, preferring reason and peaceful negotiation to bluster, he stands up to his father when pushed, defying him publicly. Motivated by the passions of youth he commits a rash, impulsive, and irreversible act.
Teiresias/Ensemble (any gender, 60s/70s): A blind seer and prophet, noble, dignified, possessed of gravity and great charisma reflecting a more ancient version of the ‘seer’—a shaman, a vehicle for a message from a non-human realm. When Teiresias speaks all who listen are enthralled. Wise and wedded to truth, Teiresias can rain down fury on those who show disrespect.
Sentry /Messenger/Ensemble (male, 20s/30s): A soldier in the palace guard, devoted to service in the name of self-preservation, he has a propensity to ramble under pressure. He is street smart, willing to tread very close to the line of speaking truth to power, but knows how far he can safely go. Later he shoulders the grim task of conveying terrible news with great sensitivity and a touch of stoicism, his previous irreverence having been knocked out of him by the grisly scenes he has witnessed.
3 Chorus/Ensemble Members (middle aged men and women): Kreon’s circle of advisors, thoughtful and cautious, they weigh their loyalty to king and state against their deeply conflicted feelings about events. They are individualized within their roles and may show different reactions depending on whether they are in the presence of Kreon, or whether they can talk among themselves more candidly.

Angel Allen (Female): a thirty-four-year-old black woman who looks five years younger; former back-up singer at The Cotton Club; a cynic who will do anything for the sake of self-preservation; has just lost her job and her man but never stops looking for her next opportunity
Guy Jacobs (Male): a thirtyish black man; costume designer at The Cotton Club; smart, caring, and unapologetic, with an unwavering eye fixed on his dreams
Delia Patterson (Female): a twenty-five-year-old black woman; social worker on staff at The Margaret Sanger family planning clinic; an activist; focused, kind, and at times shy
Sam Thomas (Male): a forty-year-old black doctor at Harlem Hospital; a dedicated worker; always ready to celebrate
Leland Cunningham (Male): a twenty-eight-year-old black man from Alabama; a six-week resident of Harlem; God-fearing and quick to judge the unfamiliar world around him
