BREAKDOWN

Actors Theatre of Louisville is committed to anti-racism and anti-oppression practices in all areas, including casting. Our goal is to create a casting process that is welcoming, absent of intimidation, and serves those auditioning as well as the creative team in the full exploration of the material. Building an environment of mutual trust that upholds our mission to unlock human potential, build community, and enrich quality of life are the principles upon which we base our processes.

In reference to the descriptions below – these are descriptions of the characters as identified in the script and in collaboration with the creative team. They are not meant to be exhaustive of who should play these roles and we seek to cast expansively and intentionally. We acknowledge the history of systemic exclusionary practices and are working to dismantle barriers to theatre-making and auditioning for performers of all races, ethnicities, national origins, gender expressions, body types, and abilities.

As an ADA compliant organization, we welcome performers of all abilities. We are prepared to engage interpreters, utilize captioning, and provide any reasonable accommodations and resources needed in order to cast performers with disabilities. We also recognize that most characters are written on the binary (use he/him or she/her pronouns) and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with.

LOVING AND LOVING

SEEKING:

MILDRED LOVING (She/Her, Character is 15-35 in the story, African American and Native American.) Wife of Richard Loving. A shy, meek person who finds they have an extraordinary amount of courage. The social politics of the time and place result in Mildred being primarily perceived by the White gaze as Black/African-American, however she was also proud of her Indigenous ancestry. Comfortable with dance/movement.

RICHARD LOVING (He/Him, Character is 21-41 in the story, Scotch/Irish American.) Husband of Mildred Loving. A gentle person who loves his wife and wants nothing more than to provide for his family despite the frustrations of the world. Comfortable with dance/movement.

MAYA (any gender identity, 20s-30s, Mixed-Race/Bicultural.) Serves as a guide through Mildred and Richard’s story and through history. They are a descendant of the Lovings’ - not necessarily biologically, but culturally and spiritually - Maya represents the legacy made possible by their courage. Also BERNIE, REPORTER, SIDNEY, PEGGY, DONALD, JUDGE BAZILE, STRANGER, and POLICEMAN. Comfortable with dance/movement and singing.
