THE ELABORATE ENTRANCE OF CHAD DEITY
SYNOPSIS: This satire opens by introducing us to an unconventional wrestling duo. Macedonio Guerra (“Mace”), a Puerto Rican wrestling fanatic (and “jobber” in the ring), finds himself teamed up with Vigneshwar Paduar (“VP”), a Brooklynite of Indian descent. The two have found a unique bond and ambition to fight together, wrestling for fun and for funds. In an electrifying turn of events, they are picked up, and cast as “terrorists” in the ring. Through Macedonio and Vigneshwar, Playwright Diaz pushes boundaries beyond the wrestling ring—addressing unspoken issues such as racism and politics and their presence within mass media.
This play will require the physical performance of wrestling moves and the use of racially-charged language. Both of these evocative storytelling components will be handled with respect and professionalism during the creative process. If you haven’t had much experience in wrestling or stage combat, do not let that stop you from coming in, as we will be casting from the ability to learn and proficiency in movement. We are looking for bold personalities and actors ready to play, so come have some fun with us as we follow this elaborate entrance into the heart of America.
These characters are written within specific ethnicity/race variables, but we invite actors who see a part of themselves in these roles to audition. If you are Afro-Latino, please see both Chad Deity and Macedonia Guerra as options for you to audition for. If you are a member of the MENASA community as well as another community reflected in this script, choose which character you feel relates the most to you.
Macedonio Guerra “The Mace”: A Puerto Rican professional wrestler. Good at what he does, undersized, our hero. Speaks with a Bronx accent and an endearing
lack of charisma. Mid-20s to Mid-30s.
Everett K. Olson “EKO”: The Caucasian owner of THE Wrestling. Brash, confident, ostensibly our villain. Non-male identifying in male-presenting drag. Early 40s to Mid-50s.
Chad Deity: The African-American champion of THE Wrestling. Confident, handsome, not a very good wrestler. Charisma brought to life through a winning smile and being extremely muscular. Early to Late 30s.
Vigneshwar Paduar “VP”: A young Indian-American Brooklynite. Charismatic, natural, effortless. Tall and lanky. Early to Late 20s.
The Bad Guy/Billy Heartland/Old Glory: A Caucasian professional wrestler (non-speaking). Mid-20s to Late 30s.
