Breakdown

ARTHUR (to play 20-35) Arthur is at once wise, generous, compassionate and boyish – rather unsure of himself, yet an inspiration to others. Baritone (low A to Eb)

GUENEVERE (to play 18-25) A young, spirited girl, who is quite caught up in chivalry and the exciting
possibilities of a promising life. She loves Arthur but is very much thrown by the arrival of Lancelot – the start of the famous “love triangle.” Mezzo (low B to high #F)

LANCELOT (to play 20-35) An abundantly self-assured knight from France who is a passionate disciple of
Arthur and his Round Table. “The greatest knight in the world,” whose only weakness is his love for Guenevere. Baritone (low A to D)

KING PELLINORE (to play late 40’s-60) A wonderfully funny and stuffily “British” old knight – provides the most consistent comic relief in the play. Dedicated to Arthur. Very eccentric. Doubles as Merlin.

MORDRED (to play mid 20’s) A truly evil young man, who was “sired” by Arthur when the king was young and naïve. A thoroughly and fascinatingly unlikable fellow. Tenor

NIMUE The “nymph” who lures Merlyn away with her hauntingly beautiful singing. Mezzo (low C# to high D#) Doubles as Morgan Le Fay.

TOM OF WARWICK (age 8-12) A young boy.

MERLYN (age 40-70) The famous wizard who teaches Arthur almost all he needs to know. He disappears after the second scene in the show. Doubles as Pellinore.

SIR DINADAN/Chorus (age 18-40) One of the three named knights who serve Arthur. Dinadan is devoted to Guenevere and doesn’t care for Lancelot.

SIR SAGRAMORE/Chorus (age 18-40) Another one of Guenevere’s Knights.

SIR LIONEL/Chorus (age 18-40) A Knight who dies and comes back to life after Lancelot defeats him in a joust.

MORGAN LE FAY (age 18-30) A beautiful and powerful sorceress. Doubles as Nimue.
