PREPARATION

Please prepare a brief musical theatre song appropriate for the season. Total audition should not exceed 3 minutes. Singing material from the shows listed is acceptable and encouraged. Please bring sheet music in your key as an accompanist will be provided.

BREAKDOWN

KINKY BOOTS
Director: Glenn Casale
Choreographer: Rickey Tripp
Rehearsals Begin: May 26, 2020 Performances: June 9 – June 14, 2020

CHARLIE PRICE: 25-35. Tenor (D3 – B4). Charlie is a young, handsome and lovable man tasked with saving the family shoe business after his father’s death. Unsure of what he wants to do with the rest of his life or how to save the factory, he finds a solution in Lola. He comes across as passive and henpecked by his fiancée but he has a mild temper and becomes a reluctant hero. Sings, “Step One”, “Take What You Got,” and “Everybody Say Yeah.”

LOLA/SIMON: 30s. Tenor (D#3 – C#5). A heterosexual drag queen, Lola is a star that feels as comfortable in a beaded gown and heels as she does wearing boxing gloves in the ring. A charismatic performer with an amazing voice, she is brutally honest, guarded, and always puts her own concerns first. Charlie penetrates her emotional armor when he gives her a chance to be a designer. Sings, “The Land of Lola,” Sex Is in the Heel,” and “Raise You Up.”

NICOLA: 20s. Alto/soprano mix (E3 – F5). Charlie’s fiancée, Nicola is single-minded and determined to get what she wants. She is strong-willed and has high expectations of her future with Charlie. Sings, “The Most Beautiful Thing In the World.”

LAUREN: 20s. Alto belt (Bb3 – D5). She is a smart, sassy, and very determined working-class woman and Charlie’s ally in saving the shoe factory. Lauren has had trouble with men but may have found the right man in Charlie. Sings, “The History of Bad Guys.”

DON: 30s-40s. Don’s a burly masculine working-class factory worker. He is a bully and Lola’s nemesis.

GEORGE: 40s-50s. George is the factory manager. He is reserved and tightly wound.

CAROUSEL

Rehearsals Begin: June 9, 2020 Performances: June 23 – June 28, 2020

BILLY BIGELOW: 25-35. Baritone, (Bb2 – G4). Handsome and charming, Billy is a Carousel barker who attracts all the local women. He is a deeply troubled man whose mistakes cost him his life. Unable to emotionally express himself, he seeks to convey his love for his wife and daughter in the afterlife. Sings, “If I Loved You,” Soliloquy,” and The Highest Judge of All.”

JULIE JORDAN: 20s. Soprano (Bb3 – G5). A shy but headstrong young mill worker, Julie defies the warnings about Billy, falling in love with and marrying him. Despite her affection, she cannot save Billy from his vices and tragedy. Sings, “If I Loved You,” “What’s the Use of Wond’rin?” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

CARRIE PIPPERIDGE: 20s. Soprano (C#4 – G5). A sweet-natured mill worker, Carrie’s prudish naiveté provides comic relief for her more serious friend Julie. Her only goal is to marry Enoch Snow. Sings, “Mister Snow,” “When The Children Are Asleep,” and “A Real Nice Clambake.”

STARKEEPER: 40s-60s. A heavenly figure, the Starkeeper helps Billy return to Earth to redeem himself.

MRS. MULLIN: 40s-50s. Mrs. Mullin owns the Carousel and is Billy’s boss. Jealous of all the young women that Billy attracts, she fires him when he marries Julie.

JIGGER CRAIGIN: 25-35. Baritone (B2 – E4). A sleazy whaler who manipulates Billy into committing robbery but is nowhere to be found when plans go awry. Must have a dangerous quality. Sings, “Blow High, Blow Low” and “Stonecutters Cut It On Stone.”

NETTIE FOWLER: 35-55. Soprano (C4-G5). Julie’s older and wiser cousin, Nettie owns the local seaside spa and is a motherly figure in the community. She takes in Julie and Billy after they are married and Billy is unemployed. Sings, “June is Bustin’ Out All Over” and “A Real Nice Clambake.”

ENOCH SNOW: 30s-40s. Legit tenor (B2 – A4). Enoch is a fisherman with a plan to become a tycoon. He intends to marry Carrie and has their whole life planned out. He is a bit stuffy but a family man at heart. Sings, “When The Children Are Asleep” and “Geraniums In The Winder.”

MR. BASCOMBE: 40s-60s. The strict owner of the local mill, he is the richest man in town and well respected.

HEAVENLY FRIEND: 30s-50s. Guides Billy to Heaven’s gate and tells him some difficult truths that he needs to hear. The role is not gender specific.

LOUISE: 20s. Billy and Julie’s teenage daughter, she is headstrong and defiant, much like her father. She has been teased her whole life because of Billy. Strong classical and musical theater dance training required with extensive partnering skills.

CARNIVAL BOY: 20s. A member of a passing carnival, the young man reminds Louise of her father. Strong classical and musical theater dance training required with extensive partnering skills.

KISS ME KATE

Rehearsals Begin: June 23, 2020 Performances: July 7 – July 12, 2020

FRED GRAHAM/PETRUCHIO: 40-50. Baritone (Bb2 – F#4). He is the actor, producer, and director of the musical The Shrew. Fred has charisma and a big ego. He is Lilli’s ex-husband and much like his character, Petruchio, enjoys sparring with his leading lady. Sings, “Wunderbar,” “Were Thine That Special Face,” and “Where Is The Life I Late Led.”

LILLI VANESSI/KATHERINE: 40-50. Soprano (A3 – Bb5). Lilli is the leading lady and a veteran diva of stage and screen. She is proud and haughty, much like her character, Katherine, in The Shrew. However, she also has a vulnerable side underneath her temper and wit. She is Fred’s ex-wife and engaged to Harrison Howell. Sings, “Wunderbar,” “I Hate Men,” and “So In Love.”

BILL CALHOUN/LUCENTIO: 20-30. Baritone (G2-F4). Bill is a magnetic Broadway performer with a gambling problem that always leads to trouble. He loves Lois Lane but can’t trust her around other men. An excellent singer and dancer. Sings, “Why Can’t You Behave” and “We Open in Venice.”

LOIS LANE/BIANCA: 20s. Alto belt with musical theatre belt (G3 – F5). Lois is a nightclub dancer with dreams of being on Broadway. The consummate ingénue, what she lacks in knowledge she makes up for with her sultry charisma. She is dating Bill but often strays. Sings, “Tom, Dick or Harry” and “Always True To You In My Fashion.”

HARRY TREVOR/BAPTISTA: 40s-50s. He is a veteran actor who mostly appears in The Shrew scenes as Katherine and Bianca’s father, Baptista.

HATTIE: 30s-40s. Alto belt with musical theatre mix (G3 – Ab5). Hattie is Lilli’s dresser, confidant, and her eyes and ears backstage. She has an ongoing flirtation with Paul. Sings, “Another Op’nin’, Another Show” and “Too Darn Hot.”

PAUL: 20s-30s. High baritone (C# - F#4). Paul is Fred’s dresser and his most trusted friend. He remains cool despite all the backstage craziness. Must be an excellent dancer. Sings, “Too Darn Hot.”

FIRST MAN: Male, 30s-50s. Baritone (B2 – D4). Runyon-like gangster who loves his job and has learned to appreciate Shakespeare after many visits to the prison library. Sings, “Brush Up Your Shakespeare.”

SECOND MAN: 30s-50s. Baritone (B2 – D4). Like the First Man but a little more the strong, silent type. Sings, “Brush Up Your Shakespeare.”

HARRISON HOWELL: Male, 40-60. Baritone (B2 – F4). Howell is a decorated and distinguished General of the US Army with political ties to the White House. Engaged to Lilli, he enjoys rigid discipline and patriarchal chauvinism. He does not fit into the backstage world of the theatre. Sings, “From This Moment On.”

ANNIE

Rehearsals Begin: July 7, 2020 Performances: July 21 – July 26, 2020

ANNIE: Age 11. Kid belt (A3 – G5). Annie is an independent, streetwise orphan who is hopeful for her parents return. Spunky and brave, she causes the most trouble at the orphanage. Annie cares deeply for others and acts as a motherly leader of the orphans. Her vulnerability and hopefulness attracts others to her. Sings, “Maybe,” “Tomorrow” and “I Don’t Need Anything But You.”

OLIVER WARBUCKS: 40s-50s. Baritone (Bb2 – F4). A self-made billionaire, Warbucks made his fortune as a tough industrialist. Obsessed with work, Annie charms him and helps to bring out his warmer, paternal side. Sings, “N.Y.C.” and “I Don’t Need Anything But You.”

MISS HANNIGAN: 35-55. Alto belt (E4 – D5). Bawdy and cantankerous, Hannigan is desperate and unhappy running an orphanage. Her disdain for children drips off every word she drunkenly utters, which is mostly directed at her nemesis, Annie. Requires an incredible comedic character actress. Sings, “Little Girls,” and “Easy Street.”

GRACE FARRELL: 25-35. Alto/soprano mix (Bb3 – G5). Grace is Warbucks’ smart and loyal personal assistant. Warm and kindhearted, she is the catalyst for Annie meeting Warbucks and becomes a maternal figure for Annie. Sings, “I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here.”

ROOSTER HANNIGAN: 30-45. High baritone (B2 - G4). Miss Hannigan’s brother, Rooster is a con artist, flashy and self-assured. Along with his girlfriend Lily, he is always thinking up a new con. The role requires a strong comedic actor. Sings, “Easy Street.”

LILY ST. REGIS: 30-45. Character soprano ( – G5). Lily is Rooster’s partner in crime. Bubbly and silly, she is a typical airhead but focused when money is involved. Sings, “Easy Street.”

FDR (FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT): 50s-60s. FDR is the President of the United States who takes a liking to Annie.

MOLLY: Age 6. Kid belt to F5. She is the youngest of the orphans. Sings, “It’s a Hard Knock Life” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile (Reprise).”

PEPPER: Age 12. Kid belt to F5. She is the toughest girl of the orphanage. Sings, “It’s a Hard Knock Life” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile (Reprise).”

DUFFY: Age 13. Kid belt to F5. She is the oldest of the orphans. Sings, “It’s a Hard Knock Life” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile (Reprise).”

JULY: Age 13. Kid belt to F5. She is the quietest of the orphans. Sings, “It’s a Hard Knock Life” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile (Reprise).”

TESSIE: Age 10. Kid belt to F5. She is the crybaby of the orphanage. Sings, “It’s a Hard Knock Life” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile (Reprise),” kid belt to F5.

KATE: Age 7. Kid belt to F5. She is the second youngest of the orphans. Sings, “It’s a Hard Knock Life” and “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile (Reprise).”

SPAMALOT

Rehearsals Begin: July 21, 2020 Performances: August 4 – August 9, 2020

KING ARTHUR: 30s-60s. Baritone (G2 – E4). Arthur is the King of England and is tasked with finding the Holy Grail, setting him forth on a quest and prompting him to form the Knights of the Roundtable. Sings, “King Arthur’s Song” and “I’m All Alone.”

SIR ROBIN: Male, 30s-40s. Baritone (C3 – E4). A Knight of the Roundtable. Ironically called “Sir Robin the Brave,” though he couldn’t be more cowardly. Joins the Knights for the singing and dancing. Also, plays GUARD 1 and BROTHER MAYNARD, a long-winded monk. Sings, “You Won’t Succeed on Broadway.”

SIR LANCELOT d/b/a LANCE: 30s-40s. Baritone (Bb3 – E4). A Knight of the Roundtable. He is fearless to a bloody fault but through a twist of fate, discovers his ‘softer side’. This actor must be great with character voices and accents, as he plays THE FRENCH TAUNTER, an arrogant, condescending, over-the-top Frenchman; the KNIGHT OF NI, an absurd, cartoonish leader of a peculiar group of Knights; and TIM THE ENCHANTER, a ghostly being with a Scottish accent. Sings, “He is Not Dead Yet” and “His Name Is Lancelot.”

PATSY: 30s-40s.High baritone (B2 – F4). King Arthur’s horse and servant. Underappreciated and always longing for King Arthur’s approval. Actor must be a good and funny physical mover with some tap dancing. Also plays MAYOR, a jolly red-faced man who advertises the merits of his hometown and the drunken, useless GUARD 2. Sings, “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life.”

SIR GALAHAD: 30s. Tenor (B2 – F4). A Knight of the Roundtable. Begins as Dennis, a lower class ‘mud gatherer’ who becomes knighted and transforms into the dashing Sir Galahad. Also plays PRINCE HERBERT’s FATHER, a wealthy, brutish Yorkshire man at odds with his sensitive son, and THE BLACK KNIGHT who is always ready to duel despite multiple injuries. Sings, “The Song That Goes Like This.”

SIR BEDEVERE: 20s-40s. A Knight of the Roundtable. An inept scholar. Also plays DENNIS GALAHAD’S MOTHER, a shrill peasant woman, and CONCORDE, Sir Lancelot’s horse. Sings, “Run Away.”

THE LADY OF THE LAKE: 20s-30s. Soprano/alto mix w/ full belt (E3 – F#5). A Diva: Strong, beautiful, and possesses mystical powers. The leading lady of the show, she is modeled both physically and vocally after the greatest female pop vocalists of our time. Sings, “Find Your Grail” and “The Diva’s Lament.”

THE FOLLOWING ROLES ARE PLAYED BY THE SAME ACTOR: Tenor (A2 – G4). Characters are 20s-30s.
HISTORIAN: A Tweedy academic; NOT DEAD FRED: A sickly little fellow who, despite other’s beliefs, claims he is “not yet dead;” FRENCH GUARD: The condemnatory French sidekick to the French Taunter; MINSTREL: In Sir Robin’s band; PRINCE HERBERT: The hopeful and frilly prince who loves to sing and pines for his love atop a tower. Sings, “Where Are You?” and “His Name is Lancelot.”

THE COLOR PURPLE

Rehearsals Begin: August 4, 2020 Performances: August 18 – August 23, 2020

CELIE: 20s-30s. Soprano/alto mix and high chest range (E3 – G5). She is at times vulnerable, spirited, and introspective but also carries a strength that guides her through life’s troubles. An observer, Celie can come across as passive but possesses a strong, hard soul. She believes she is unattractive due to years of mistreatment until she breaks away to find love and independence. Sings, “What About Love” and “I Am Here.”

NETTIE: 20s-30s. Soprano/alto mix (F3 – A4). Celie’s sister, Nettie is attractive, adventurous and educated. She shares a deep bond with her sister that remains even when Mister forces her to leave Celie and cuts off their communication for years. Sings, “Our Prayer.”

MISTER: 30s-40s. High baritone (G2 – Ab4). Mister, whose real name is Albert, is a handsome and domineering man capable of brutal behavior. He is married to Celie, abuses her, and has an ongoing affair with Shug. He also is a victim of his circumstances and eventually softens. Sings, “Big Dog” and “Mister’s Song.”

SOFIA: 30s-40s. Alto (E3 – D5). A force to be reckoned with, Sofia does not let anyone mistreat her. Larger framed, she is comfortable with her body and very sensual. Sofia has a wicked sense of humor and a tender side that she tries to hide. She dominates her husband Harpo. Sings, “Hell No!” and “Any Little Thing.”

HARPO: 20s-30s. High baritone (F#2 – Ab4). Mister’s son, Harpo is good-hearted but often confused about the things going on around him. He represents the new generation. He is unable to get his wife Sofia to obey him the way Celie obeys Mister. Sings, “Brown Betty” and “Any Little Thing.”

SHUG AVERY: 30s-40s. Alto (E3 – Eb5). A popular star, Shug is independent and dynamic. She is straightforward and extremely attractive. Loved by both Celie and Mister, she helps Celie find her voice. Her beauty masks her frailty. Sings, “Push Da Button” and “What About Love?”

SQUEAK: 20s-30s. Character soprano (E4 – Gb5). Squeak gets her name from her small stature and voice. Giddy and flirtatious, she is Harpo’s waitress at the juke joint and lover. She tries to go toe-to-toe with Sofia but cannot match her in strength. Sings, “Brown Betty.”
