The 2020 Helen Hayes Awards, recognizing the outstanding work on Washington area stages in 2019, continued its four-week virtual event series.
Monumental Theatre Company received eight Helen Hayes Award, Helen Category nominations at theatreWashington's 2020 Helen Hayes Award Nominations Announcement Event held on February 3, 2020 at The National Theatre. Daddy Long Legs received six total nominations, including Outstanding Production in a Musical. Monumental Theatre Company's production of Be More Chill also received two nominations.
Tonight, at a celebration honoring theatre excellence on stages across the Washington area, theatre artists, administrators, patrons, and special guests gathered in the National Theatre's Helen Hayes Gallery for theatreWashington's announcement of nominees for the 36th Annual Helen Hayes Awards, which will be presented on Monday, May 18 at an event at the Anthem.
Following its sold-out run of Be More Chill in 2019, the Helen Hayes Award-winning Monumental Theatre Company will be producing three musicals for the upcoming 2020 season: Head Over Heels, The Drowsy Chaperone and Songs for a New World.
Launching its first production of the 2019-2020 season, Creative Cauldron presents the regional premiere of the Off-Broadway sellout smash hit Disenchanted! Set in the present-day, a posse of storybook princesses, led by Snow White, ditch the damsels-in-distress diatribe and tell some hilarious truths about those so-called a?oehappily-ever-aftera?? endings. Serving up the irresistible songs and wit of playwright, composer, and lyricist Dennis T. Giacino is the critically acclaimed team of director Matt Conner, musical director Elisa Rosman, Scenic and Costume Designer Margie Jervis, and Lighting Designer Lynn Joslin. The production will run through October 27 at Creative Cauldron, 410 South Maple Avenue, Falls Church, VA. Performances are Thursdays at 8:00PM, Fridays at 8:00PM, Saturdays at 8:00PM, and Sundays at 2:00PM & 7:00PM. Press night for Disenchanted is Saturday, October 5 at 8:30 pm. PLEASE RSVP BY SEPT 30.
The Washington Stage Guild returns to the Nobel Prize-winning George Bernard Shaw, with a new production of the first play by GBS ever presented by the Stage Guild, Candida. Subtitled a?oeA Mystery,a?? in it, a preacher and a poet are in love with the same woman. The former is her husband, the latter wants to woo her away, and both are shocked by her ultimate choice and the reasons for it.
The 2019 Theatre Week Kickoff Party celebrates the launch of the 2019-2020 theatre season and the start of Theatre Week in the Washington region. The event will take place on Saturday, September 7, 11am-4pm at Arena Stage Mead Center for American Theater. It is a free event and tickets are available through the TodayTix app and website.
Monumental Theatre Company will be adding two additional shows to its critically acclaimed production of Be More Chill a?"a?oeperformed as it was always meant to bea??a?"according to The Washington Post, extending its run through August 2, 2019. Extension shows will play on August 1st at 8pm and August 2nd at 10pm. The August 2nd show will be a a?oeLate Nighta?? engagement including a drinking game with alcoholic beverages available for purchase.
The viral hit musical Be More Chill, with a book by Joe Tracz and music and lyrics by Joe Iconis, plays July 11 through 29, 2019, at Monumental Theatre Company. Be More Chill follows nerdy loner Jeremy, played by Ben Ribler, who ingests a supercomputer called a 'SQUIP' in order to become cool and popular. Jeremy's best friend Michael is played by Christian Montgomery. His love interest, Christine, is played by Monumental newcomer Jyline Carranza. The 'SQUIP' will be played by Caroline Dubberly.
