MOVEIUS Contemporary Ballet To Premiere RITE OF SPRING, CRASH OF FALL At Kennedy Center

MOVEIUS Contemporary Ballet (MOVEIUS), pushing the boundaries of ballet to tackle policy issues affecting society, will premiere Rite of Spring, Crash of Fall for its commission at The Kennedy Center. The 35-minute ballet uses Stravinsky's Rite of Spring score and storyline as the backdrop for revisiting the 2008 financial crisis on its 10-year anniversary. The company will also present an excerpt from its acclaimed Glacier: A Climate Change Ballet-which they recently presented at the Global Climate Summit in San Francisco. Performances will take place October 13-14 at the Millenium Stage at 6:00 p.m.

Additionally, the company will present full-length performances of both Rite of Spring, Crash of Fall and Glacier, November 2-11, during its home season at Dance Loft on 14, the company's 8,000 square foot facility in Ward 4. MOVEIUS' season at Dance Loft on 14 marks a special milestone for the company, as it will be the first time the dance company will have a home season in the space-opened in 2015 by Diana Movius to address the need for affordable rehearsal and performance space in D.C.

"Whether about the immediate threat of global warming, or the effects of a financial crisis that has drastically shaped the past 10 years, ballet provides a unique opportunity to lend emotion to these challenging political and social issues," says climate-change policy expert and MOVEIUS/Dance Loft on 14 Artistic Director Diana Movius. "I want audience members to leave with a desire to take action."

With Rite of Spring, Crash of Fall, MOVEIUS continues to create a path for ballet to speak to social issues. Using pedestrian props drawn from every day spaces, such as corporate offices, the company of dancers inhabits the stage deploying MOVEIUS' signature contemporary ballet style, while examining power and accountability.

Rite of Spring, Crash of Fall was commissioned by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as part of the 2018 Local Dance Commissioning Project. It was created during the 2018 DanceICONS Choreographic Institute at Dance Loft on 14. Glacier was co-commissioned by the City of Takoma Park and Atlas Performing Arts Center.

Rite of Spring, Crash of Fall at the Kennedy Center will run Saturday, October 13th through Sunday, October 14th at 6:00 p.m. at the Millenium Stage, located at 2700 F Street, NW Washington, DC.

MOVEIUS' home season at Dance Loft on 14 will take place November 2nd-11th on Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. Dance Loft on 14 is located at 4618 14th Street Northwest, Washington, DC.

REPERTORY DETAILS

Rite of Spring, Crash of Fall (WORLD PREMIERE)

Choreography: Diana Movius

Composer: Igor Stravinsky

A dance-theater piece underpinned by contemporary ballet technique, Rite of Spring, Crash of Fall borrows its storyline from Stravinsky's Rite of Spring, and features Stravinsky's full score to revisit the financial crisis of 2008. As in the traditional Rite of Spring storyline, an ancient tribe chooses a victim-The Chosen One-to sacrifice to the gods. With an eye back to 2008, and with our current political environment in mind, the ballet will prompt audiences to ask the question: who will be The Chosen One in this modern take on a classic story?

Glacier: A Climate Change Ballet (2015)

Choreography: Diana Movius

Music: Max Richter, David Lang, Andrew Thomas

GLACIER creates an onstage arctic environment where the threat of polar icecap collapse is set to movement by dancers who ripple, crack and plunge amidst live video projections by filmmaker Robin Bell.
