Deviated Theatre Celebrates 10th Anniversary With World Premiere Of BEYOND DEVIATED THEATRE, whose mesmerizing dance operas are heralded for their spellbindingly compelling choreography, celebrates its 10th Anniversary performance with the world premiere of Beyond, presented by Dance Place (DC) on July 7th and 8th, 2018. With an all-heroine cast, Beyond follows Luna the astronaut on a journey with an interplanetary reach that takes her to the very edge of life.

For DEVIATED THEATRE, the premiere of Beyond at Dance Place is filled with meaning-as it was on Dance Place's stage that the company made its debut exactly ten years ago. Since then, the company's husband and wife team-Choreographer Kimmie Dobbs Chan and Theater Director Enoch Chan-have created six full-length original dance operas.

"My spirit has caught fire again," says Dobbs Chan. Who, after two years recovering from injuries and having had to step away from the dance studio, looks back at her past ten creative years and muses about the fresh perspective she has gained: "I am feeling more comfortable in my own skin, more vibrant with my choreographic voice, and I could not be more excited for this new work."

Costumes for Beyond were created in collaboration with avant-garde fashion designer Andy Christ, who also helped create costumes for the company's acclaimed dance opera Creature. This project will also mark a new collaboration with graphic designer Kamajian Kamajinator for projection. Beyond was workshopped as part of a post-graduate professional development program at the Choreographic Institute at the Dance Loft, and is supported in part by a 2016/2017 rehearsal space subsidy grant from Dance Metro DC.

In Beyond, Luna the astronaut is guided by Lady Time on a journey to life's very edge. Her childhood stargazing and dreams of flying are transformed through heroic trials in the void of outer-space and on the stormy climes of Mars. Accompanied by Figments of her own mind-which appear as both playful companions and burdensome shadows-Luna learns that every thrust outward into the solar system carries her further inward to frontiers of her true self. Suspended between here and hereafter, Luna discovers that getting lost (on Mars) is part of getting found.

ABOUT DEVIATED THEATRE

Husband and wife team, Kimmie Dobbs Chan and Enoch Chan, founded DEVIATED THEATRE in 2008. The pair utilizes a mix of dance, acting, and aerials to tell fantastical stories of other worlds. Choreographer Kimmie Dobbs Chan's movement, at times pedestrian and precise, resonates with Director Enoch Chan's enigmatic aesthetic to evoke powerful and even haunting imagery. The company has performed nationally at venues including The Kennedy Center, National Gallery of Art, Ailey Citigroup Theater, and more. Awards include the Individual Artists Award for Choreography from the Maryland State Arts Council (2014, 2011), Mark Ryder Original Choreography Grant (2012), and the John F.
