The Marlowe Theatre In Canterbury Welcomes Two Productions Celebrating Young Dance Talent

THE MARLOWE Theatre in Canterbury welcomes two productions celebrating young dance talent in our region this week.

The first of these is Steam (Thursday 5 and Friday 6 July), presented by The Marlowe Dance Network. Building on the tradition established in previous years by the Spires Academy showcase, Steam brings together dancers from 25 schools and dance groups across east Kent, to present an exciting mixed programme of all dance genres, all inspired by the same theme.

This year's theme, Steam, was inspired by Gary Clarke Company's dance theatre work Coal, which was performed at The Marlowe Theatre in February. The Marlowe Dance Network provides year-round opportunities for young dancers to engage with the best of The Marlowe's presented programme, and as part of this, teachers were invited to take part in a workshop with Gary and members of his company to help start the choreographic process.

Among the works being performed will be pieces by two of Canterbury Christ Church University's choreographers-in-residence, Dam van Huynh and Ash Mukhejee.

The groups taking part in the showcase are: Thursday - Canterbury Christ Church University, Spires Academy (Canterbury), Canterbury Academy, The Marlowe Dance Company, St Nicholas School (Canterbury), Herne Bay High, Herne Bay High Boys Company, Hartsdown Academy (Margate), Astor College (Dover), Stardust Studios (Ashford), Prima Stage School (Maidstone), Wickhambreaux Primary, Motion Alpha (CCCU boys company).

Friday - Hoath Primary School (Canterbury), The Marlowe Dance Company, Barham Church of England Primary School (Canterbury), Chislet Church of England Primary School, (Canterbury), CTS Performing Arts (Canterbury), Simon Langton Girls School (Canterbury), Next Generation Dance Studio (Canterbury), Community College Whitstable, Goodwin Academy (Deal), Folkestone Academy, St Eanswyths Church of England Primary School (Folkestone), Dancer Xtreme (Canterbury), CJ's Dance & Fitness (Dover), Canterbury Christ Church University.

The second show is Dance Warehouse's The Little Match Girl (Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 July), a beautifully told reinterpretation of the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale by Dance Warehouse pupils. On a school trip to the Victorian museum at Ironbridge, a young girl gets separated from her group and finds herself on a magical adventure.
