The Upper Canada Choristers celebrate the 15th anniversary of their accomplished Latin ensemble Cantemos, in the choir’s spring concert.

With Laurie Evan Fraser conducting, and with pianist Hye Won (Cecilia) Lee, the spirited mixed-media evening features a world premiere and old favorites, performed against a kaleidoscopic film background of dance, shadow puppetry and the creation of a 3-D artwork.

Highlight is the world premiere of El Pajaro Que Espero (The Bird I Await), commissioned from Venezuelan composer César Alejandro Carrillo, written to poetry by Carrillo’s wife, Laura Morales Balza, and dedicated to the memory of their son, Simon, who died young.

For 15 years, Cantemos has been brightening the Toronto soundscape with music in Spanish, Portuguese, Latin and native languages of the Americas.  Comprising singers mostly from Venezuelan members of the Upper Canada Choristers, the ensemble – along with its parent choir – has commissioned and introduced many new works to its audiences. A number of those will be performed on the May 12 program.

LIVE STREAM OPTION: The concert also streams live through https://www.uppercanadachoristers.org/ or directly at https://youtube.com/live/i9xrqdJUayg.
