'A Musical Fable.' This is the subtitle that author Arthur Laurents chose when writing his script for the blockbuster musical 'GYPSY.' And after a delay of almost 3 years due to covid, the Shaw Festival in Niagara on the Lake is presenting their version of this famed musical fable at the Festival Theatre.
Due to popular demand, The Land Acknowledgement, or As You Like It is returning for one more week – May 4 to 7, 2023 at the CAA Theatre.
During the Shaw Festival's Annual General Meeting, Treasurer Greg Prince announced the Shaw Festival attained operating revenues of $35.7 million – The Shaw's largest operating revenue level ever – and posted an operating surplus of $7,000 for the 2022 season, the most multi-faceted and extensive season yet produced at The Shaw.
In addition to realizing a financial gain, the Shaw Festival also made strides in cultivating new funding partnerships, while supporting surrounding businesses, during the on-going COVID-19 pandemic.
In keeping with the Town of Niagara-on-the-Lake's municipal order limiting organized mass gatherings, the Shaw Festival is now forced to cancel all public events and performances throughout July. The Festival will continue to follow the guidance and directives of Canadian public health agencies, all levels of government and the organization's insurer to determine when The Shaw will be able to safely return to stage.
During the Annual General Meeting held earlier today, the Shaw Festival announced positive financial results for the 2019 season. Kevin Patterson, Treasurer of the Board of Directors, shared with an audience of patrons, donors and company members that both sales and fundraising revenues achieved all-time highs, resulting in a $519,000 season surplus.
