The National Ballet Of Canada Tours To Hamburg, Germany

Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced the principal casting for the company's upcoming tour to Hamburg, Germany with an all-Canadian programme featuring The Dreamers Ever Leave You by Choreographic Associate Robert Binet, James Kudelka's The Man in Black and Emergence by Crystal Pite. The National Ballet will perform as part of the 44th Hamburg Ballet Days, a two-week festival of dance, for two performances July 3 - 4, 2018 at Großes Haus. This will be the company's first appearance in Hamburg since 1994.

The tour to Hamburg continues the National Ballet's mandate to showcase the company's artists and repertoire on the world stage. Recent tours have included London, New York City, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco and Paris, where the National Ballet was named Best Company of the Year by France's l'Association Professionnelle de la Critique de Théâtre, de Musique et de Danse.

The Dreamers Ever Leave You is Robert Binet's response to the Group of Seven artist Lawren Harris, whose paintings distilled the beauty of Canada's northern landscape. The Dreamers Ever Leave You is set to music by Lubomyr Melnyk and was originally created as a co-production with the Art Gallery of Ontario. The ballet recently toured to London, England where it was performed by dancers from both the National Ballet and The Royal Ballet.

Set to six songs sung by the late great Johnny Cash, The Man in Black by James Kudelka features four dancers wearing cowboy boots who create moving tableaux that are by turns haunting, funny and anguished.

Emergence is a provocative work by Vancouver-based choreographer Crystal Pite. The work casts a group of insect-like dancers in an eerily subterranean universe. When it premiered in 2009, Emergence won four Dora Mavor Moore Awards for Outstanding Production, Outstanding New Choreography, Outstanding Performance and Outstanding Sound Design/Composition by Owen Belton.

The 44th Hamburg Ballet Days will culminate with the annual Nijinsky Gala on July 8, 2018 featuring dancers from The Hamburg Ballet, international guest artists and the National Ballet's Principal Dancers Guillaume Côté, Francesco Gabriele Frola, Heather Ogden and Jillian Vanstone.

This fall, the National Ballet's 2018/19 season in Toronto opens with the North American premiere of Anna Karenina choreographed by John Neumeier on November 10, 2018. Based on Leo Tolstoy's great masterwork, Anna Karenina is the first co-production between the National Ballet, The Hamburg Ballet and The Bolshoi Ballet.
