The world-renowned Martha Graham Dance Company returns to The Joyce Theater April 2–14, 2019 with The EVE Project, the Company's season theme celebrating female empowerment and the upcoming 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. The season focuses on both historical and contemporary ideas of the feminine. Commissioned works from five of today's top choreographers will be presented, and the classic repertory features Martha Graham's heroines and anti-heroines—all with an underlying statement about female power.

The January GrahamDeconstructed focuses on the extraordinary partnership between Martha Graham and sculptor-designer Isamu Noguchi and two of their collaborations, Herodiade (1944) and El Penitente (1940). The evening will include a rehearsal run-through of both works introduced by a conversation about the Graham/Noguchi collaboration. Following the presentation, the audience will have a chance to explore and photograph the Noguchi set pieces/sculptures.

Graham 2 To Perform At Appalachian Spring Holiday Event

As part of the Martha Graham Dance Company's popular Studio Series, Graham 2 will perform Martha Graham's beloved masterwork Appalachian Spring (1944). One of Graham's most celebrated works, Appalachian Spring has been called "shining and joyous" and "a testimony to the simple fineness of the human spirit" (The New York Times). The work features Aaron Copland's Pulitzer Prize-winning score and a spare set by Graham's longtime collaborator Isamu Noguchi. Performances are Saturday, December 8, at 1pm (family matinee) with an evening performance at 6pm, and Sunday, December 9, at 2pm. On Saturday evening, the score will be performed live by the International Chamber Orchestra of America directed by Daniel Feng.

The EVE Project honors not only the progress of women in the last 100 years, but also provides entrée into today's most pressing conversations about gender and power. New works from several female choreographers have been commissioned, and the classic repertory will feature both Martha Graham's heroines and anti-heroines—all with an underlying statement about female power.

The program includes works by guest choreographer Becca Lemme, Brandon Whited (UCSB Theater and Dance Assistant Professor- and newly minted dance faculty member), and Artistic Director Pilafian himself. Also, included in the program will be a work by mid-century firebrand choreographer (and dancer for the dispossessed) Jane Dudley, as restaged by longtime Dudley interpreter Nancy Colahan.
