In Matthew Wells' new play Queen Mair it's ninety minutes before the start of the tale that is known as King Lear. The old king's wife, Queen Mair, has asked her three daughters and their nurse to join her in her private bedchamber, to say farewell to the youngest, gentle Cordelia, whose hand is about to be given in marriage. But there are other farewells to be taken, and painful secrets that must be revealed, before young Cordelia will be on her way.
The Central Works 30th Anniversary Season launches with world premiere #66, from the Central Works Writers Workshop. A new play about art and scandal, The Human Ounce by Nicole Parizeau running Feb 15a?"Mar 15 (Previews Feb. 13 &14). In The Human Ounce by Nicole Parizeau, aspects of cancel culture from across the ages are explored in this new play about art and scandal. A fine old painting on the gallery wall is holding pride of place in the museum. The painter? An old master in his own right, admired worldwide, historically important, and an inspiration to thousands. And revealed as a monster. What now? The art is not the artist; should it pay for the sins of he who painted it?
Central Works 2019 Season closes with an exploration into the sensual world of writer Cristina García in The Lady Matador's Hotel running Oct 12a?"Nov 10 (previews Oct 10 & 11). The play is adapted from García's novel, which was described by the NY Times as possessing a?oe...the energy of an obsessive tango.
