An adulteress, bigamist, thief and whore, Moll Flanders' checkered past has finally caught up with her and she now finds herself in Newgate Prison surrounded by an assortment of criminals: including a prophetic half-wit, a hollow-eyed consumptive, a devastated mother grieving the death of her baby, an opportunistic rogue, a dangerous madwoman with a maternal obsession, a vindictive young prostitute, and an aging gentleman clinging desperately to his respectability. As Moll recounts her sordid tale, her fellow prisoners each assume roles that bring Moll’s scandalous story to life.
PlayGround has announced the full lineup for its 26th annual FESTIVAL OF NEW WORKS, running May 9-29, returning for in-person performances at Potrero Stage, where the festival has been based since 2008, and, new this year, all simulcast online.
The fifth play of Ross Valley Players 89th season is Incidents in the Wicked Life of Moll Flanders...adapted from Daniel Defoe's 1722 novel, written by Jennifer Le Blanc and directed by Ellen Brooks. A bawdy story about a poor damsel in distress who surrenders her virtue again and again (and again) to get to the top of society, Moll Flanders is one of the most memorable heroines in the canon.
