Interview: JOHN WELLS III of STRAIGHT at LOUD FRIDGE GROUP

San Diego has a new theatre company in town, called the Loud Fridge Group!

I had the good fortune to chat with the Artistic Director for the company and starring in the the company's first show, John Wells III to find out a little bit more about the company and their play STRAIGHT. Directed by Kate Rose Reynolds and Andreá Agosto STRAIGHT is playing July 25th - August 4th at the Tenth Avenue Arts Center

Tell me a little bit about Loud Fridge Theatre Group and its theatrical mission.

Loud Fridge Theatre Group, was founded by a collection of actors and designers with the common goal of telling honest stories well. We are a brand-new theatre group, excited to produce our very first production. We are dedicated to telling stories that reflect the human condition, stories that challenge us to question social norms, and stories that give us insight to every walk of life. The theatre aim's to be a constant noise in the community, telling stories that are bold, honest, and diverse- and telling it LOUDLY! It is a Theatre dedicated to people and therefore dedicated to you!

Basically, we intend to make some noise!

What about the play STRAIGHT felt right for your theatre company perform?

At a purely basic level, we chose to produce this show because it is a story that deserves to be heard. STRAIGHT is a provocative play by Drew Fornarola and Scott Elmegreen, which deals with fidelity, sexuality and identity in "post-equality" America. While I think many people will leave the show, having taken away completely different interpretations, at the root I believe STRAIGHT is a story about love. Unrequited love, unconditional love, unexpected love! And how can you love, when you haven't learned how to love yourself?

What do you hope audiences take away from the show?

That life is messy! We as humans like to put things in their own perspective categories, but life isn't always black and white. In fact, most of life consists of navigating through the shades of gray.

During the rehearsal phase has anything surprised you during the creative process?

Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the cast connected with each other. They all have such natural chemistry and it immediately showed on the stage. It has been nice watching our directors, Kate Rose Reynolds and Andréa Agosto work with such talented professionals and I know that chemistry is going to be amplified on the stage.
