The Sound of Music, a beloved musical brimming with romance and resilience, was crafted by the team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. These giants of musical theatre composed the music and lyrics, weaving a tapestry of joyous songs and heartfelt moments. The book, or script, was adapted by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse from the 1959 film of the same name. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1959 and quickly captured hearts worldwide.
Set in Salzburg, Austria, on the eve of World War II, the story follows Maria Rainer, a postulant who leaves the abbey to become a governess for the seven children of Captain Georg von Trapp, a widower with strict disciplinary methods. Maria's warmth and love of music gradually transform the household, bringing joy back into their lives. As tensions rise in Europe, Maria and the Captain find themselves falling in love, but their happiness is threatened by the Nazi presence in Austria.
The Sound of Music became a cultural phenomenon, winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Its enduring popularity is a testament to its timeless themes of love, family, and the power of music in the face of adversity. The iconic songs like "Do-Re-Mi," "My Favorite Things," and "Climb Every Mountain" continue to resonate with audiences of all ages.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC Will Be Performed by Central Florida Community Arts in June
May 26, 2021The Youth Theatre Troupe planned to perform The Sound of Music in June of 2020. The show was postponed twice as staff pivoted to virtual rehearsals for the remainder of the year. After safely reintroducing in-person rehearsals, the cast of 40 students will finally present their show June 4-5, 2021.

May 22, 2019Central Florida Community Arts is proud to present Symphonic Broadway, performed by the CFCArts Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are on sale now for performances at Calvary Orlando on June 14 and 15. This show features the 160-member CFCArts Symphony Orchestra playing the best of musical theatre through the ages. The orchestra is complemented by an ensemble of singers, soloists, and featured dancers to bring some of the songs to life in theatrical style.
