VENUS IN FUR
The Southwest Premiere of the Tony-nominated Best Play of 2012
"The teeter-tottering test of wills that takes place in Venus in Fur makes even the most fraught encounter between a domineering director and a sensitive performer seem like a play date in the sandbox. Aux Dog Theatre produced All in the Timingby
David Ives at The Gorilla Tango in its inaugural season.
Venus in Fur is a funny and erotic take on the battle of the sexes with a slightly kinky twist. A playwright/director is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochistic tale Venus in Furs. Enter Vanda Jordan, a vulgar, frantic actress who missed her audition hours ago. The young actress seems at first to have no chance of landing the part, but slowly proves herself a talent and a force to match the director. A provocative, sexy drama that represents yet another departure for the multifaceted David Ives, writer of
All in the Timing.

Looking for:
1 actor; 1 actress.
Both need to create two distinct physical, vocal and psychological characters: their "real" character and the character they create in the play-within-the-play. Both actors must have comic ability and be able to express sensuality and sexuality, and be willing to explore the sadomasochistic relationship in the play-within-the-play.

Vanda Jordan / Vanda von Dunayev
    • Vanda, 20's. Beautiful, mysterious, spontaneous, pushy, emotional, sensual, intelligent but crass, desperate for the job. She strips down to black lingerie, a garter, very high heels and a dog collar. Her speech may be somewhat strident, in more of a New York dialect. A very good actress although you wouldn't know it from her behavior.

  • Dunayev. Elegant, sensual/sexual, flirtatious, a provocateur, disdainful, haughty, her sexuality is expressed through sadism. The dialect is "phony transatlantic" - slightly Hungarian, her voice is warmer and in a lower-range than the "real" Vanda.
Thomas Novachek / (Severin von) Kushemski
    • Novachek, 30s. Arrogant, impatient, curious, sexual, masochistic, inwardly insecure and frightened of passion. Considers himself an intellectual and is arrogant about that and his education. More than willing to "play the game". He is also a very good actor.

  • Kushemski. Aristocratic, refined, tries to be dominant but cannot because he doesn't want to be. His sexuality is expressed through his masochism. The dialect is "phony transatlantic" -slightly Hungarian.
Actors are asked to prepare one contemporary comedic monologue and one contemporary dramatic monologue; not to exceed 4 minutes each.
