BETC is pleased to announce auditions on Sunday, March 20th, for a professional staged reading of The Madres by Stephanie Walker. The Madres (BETC's 2015-2016 Generations competition winner) is set against the backdrop of Argentina's Dirty War. As the Mothers of the Disappeared march in the Plaza de Mayo, three generations of Acosta women face incredible risk as they try to reunite their family before the youngest gives birth. A brutal military dictatorship and complicit Church leaders stand in their way. A powerful story of one family's attempt to survive against savage odds.
Three female and two male roles are available:
Josefina Acosta: (60’s) The grandmother and matriarch of the Acosta family; a spirited, feisty woman who is also an excellent baker.
Carolina Acosta: (40’s) Josefina's daughter, a risk-taking political activist searching for her daughter, who she fears has been arrested by the Argentinean government.
Belen Acosta: (early 20’s) A young pregnant woman with everything to lose.
Diego: (early 20’s) A neighborhood boy, now a young man who has become a foot soldier in the Argentinean army.
Padre Juan: (60’s) A Catholic priest from the neighborhood who is now the military chaplain at ESMA, a government detainment center.
Non-union and AEA actors are welcome to submit and all performers will receive a stipend. However, we have a limited number of audition slots and preference will be given to performers of color, since we are seeking a multi-ethnic cast to tell this Argentinean story.
Auditions will be held from 1-5pm on Sunday 3/20 at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. We will reply with your assigned time as soon as possible.
Please prepare a memorized monologue of two minutes or less for your audition.

Stephanie Walker will be coming to Boulder for a one-week residency with BETC that involves daily rehearsals leading to a public staged reading at the Boulder Public Library on Saturday, May 14th. After the reading, The Madres will be under consideration for a future world premiere production at BETC.
The rehearsal schedule is:
Monday, May 9th: Meet-and-greet, and first read-through, location and time TBD (evening)
Tuesday, May 10th: 1:30-7:30 Boulder Public Library
Wednesday, May 11th: 1:30-7:30 Boulder Public Library
Thursday, May 12th: 1:30-7:30 Boulder Public Library
Friday, May 13th: 1:30-5:30 Boulder Public Library
Saturday, May 14th: morning rehearsal at BPL 10 a.m.-noon; 1 p.m. public reading, followed by talk-back and post-show reception, will conclude by approximately 5 p.m.
