Kumu Kahua Theatre Holds an Audition Workshop and Auditions

Open auditions will be held to cast the upcoming production of the underneath by Susan Soon He Stanton at Kumu Kahua Theatre. The show will be directed by Taurie Kinoshita.

In this noir mystery drama, a man returns to Hawaii after ten years, responding to an urgent summons from his brother. On arrival he learns that his brother is missing, and that many things have changed since their childhood. To uncover the mysteries, the brother encounters a girlfriend, a homeless man who may have witnessed something relevant, a crime boss and an enigmatic young private investigator. Identities shift and the past re-emerges as the search seems to reveal more questions than answers.

Rehearsals may begin as early as Monday, September 1st; the show runs November 6 – December 7, 2014, with possible extension dates running through December 14, 2014.

Director, Taurie Kinoshita is looking for 5* actors to play these roles:

Col the older brother, late twenties, returns back to Honolulu after many years away.

Jem the young brother, mid twenties. Stayed in Hawaii after their mother died. Also appears in younger, memory versions at age seven and fourteen.

Mika a girlfriend of Jem’s, living at his house, twenties.

Wake (pronounced Wha-kay) the big crime boss

Auntie Evie mid-sixties, Aunt to Jem and Col. Raised Jem after his mother died.

Renton Jem’s best friend and a budding shamus.

Homeless Guy Lives on the bank of the Ala Wai Canal.

*Jem, Renton and Homeless Guy should always be played by the same actor

Auditions will be held at the Kumu Kahua Theatre, on the corner of Merchant and Bethel Streets. The entrance into Kumu Kahua Theatre is from the small park on the Merchant Street side. Auditions will consist of readings from the script, and some movement exercises. Please dress accordingly. Auditioners may come either day, but should come early and may be asked to stay for the whole time.

There will be a free audition workshop held from 6:00-8:00 pm, Sunday, August 17, 2014, also at Kumu Kahua Theatre. This workshop is an opportunity for all interested to work with the script and learn first-hand from the production director what she is looking for.

Scripts are available for loan with a $10 cash deposit at the Kumu Kahua Theatre office weekdays between 11am and 3pm–please call 536-4222 before coming to the theatre.
