ShenanArts along with director Barbara Ferguson and producer Phil Dixon invite you to audition for the award winning drama, The Miracle Worker. This is the true story of Helen Keller's enlightment from a world of silence and darkness to a single moment that led her to become a worldwide advocate for the deaf and blind and deaf/blind peoples of the world. The story begins when an illness at 19 months old robs Helen of her sight and hearing. Her grief stricken and frustrated parents finally find the miracle in an arrogant young women, Annie Sullivan, who exposes Helen to the langage that opens up her world.

Roles:

Helen Keller
: Age 7. Deaf and blind since 19 months old, Helen is an unruly child given to tantrums. This is a very physically demanding part but there is only one line. It is a very endearing role and I look forward to finding my Helen.

Annie Sullivan: Age 20. Toughened and formerly blind, an arrogant Irish Yankee finds herself in post Civil War Alabama as the governess/teacher of Helen.

Captain Keller: Pushing 40. Helen's father was a Captain for the Confederacy. He is now the editor of the newspaper. He is a chivalrous southern gentleman who is struggling to accomodate his second wife and their afflicted child.

Kate Keller: Late 20s. Helen's devoted mother will do anything for her child. She also struggles with being a subserviant wife and a step mother to James.

James Keller: Helen's half brother is an adolecent who is unhappy with losing his mother, his father's new wife, and, of course, the offensive Helen. He is intrigued, however, by Annie.

Viney: The Kellers had a devoted Black woman that helped with the everyday upkeep at Ivy Green. She was the cook, the nanny, and the housekeper. It's a comical role. If she sings, that would be nice.

Martha: Young black girl. Helen's playmate. Gets into a skirmish with Helen.

Percy: Adorable little black boy with an endearing role.

Anagnos: Director of the Perkins Institute for the Blind. Speaks with a Greek accent.

The Doctor: Short but important part at the beginning of the play.

Blind Students: 3 to 5 young blind children that send Annie on her way.
