The second show of Kumu Kahua Theatres 51st season will be The Kasha of Kaimuk?, by Hannah Ii-Epstein

The show will be directed by Anna Rose Ii-Epstein and runs October 28 -November 14, 2021.

Show description:
Based on Hawai?i?s most famous & terrifying haunted house comes the thriller The Kasha of Kaimuk?. Sam & Amanda are a lesbian couple who recently moved into the Kaimuk? house with a new roommate, Emily. With their friend Joseph, they find the Kasha, a ghost from Japanese

folklore who has an insatiable hunger for blood and corpses. Will these four friends survive, or die like the others?

PLAYWRIGHT’S BIO:

Hannah Ii-Epstein (she/her/hers), born and raised on the North Shore of O`ahu and received her MFA in Writing for the Screen + Stage at Northwestern University in 2018. She is a creative writer, dramatist, and Co-Artistic Director of Nothing Without a Company (NWaC). Since 2007, over twenty of her works were produced in Hawai`i by Kumu Kahua Theatre and in Chicago by NWaC, About Face Theatre’s Babes on Stage, and Fury Theatre's SAST. In 2016 Hannah and her play, Not One Batu, was honored by Hawai`i State Theatre Council Po`okela Award. In 2018, in Chicago Not One Batu was Reader and Jeff Recommended. In 2019 her short film, Redesign Your Life, won 5 awards, including Best Film Runner Up at 48HFP Chicago. Hannah is a founding member of BearCat Productions and a member of the Hawaiian Civic Club and Aloha Center Chicago.

DIRECTOR?S BIO:

Anna Rose Ii-Epstein (she/her) is a co-founder of Nothing Without a Company. Although a native of Texas, she has considered Chicago and the theatre community her home for over 14 years. She fell in love with Chicago while attending the National High School Institute Cherub program at Northwestern. Soon after, she attended DePaul Theater School, where she feel in love with yoga, and Columbia College Chicago, where she received her BFA in Acting with a minor in Directing. She has performed, directed, assistant directed, assistant taught, and produced over 25 new plays with Nothing Without a Company and various other companies including Steppenwolf Theatre, Victory Gardens Theatre, The Goodman Theatre, Mary Archie Theatre, The Inconvenience, Redmoon Theater, Nothing Special Productions, About Face Theater, Pride Films and Plays, Silent Theatre Company, Windy City Performing Arts, and The Center on Halsted. Anna Rose is a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT), focusing on energy work and body awareness through breath control. She is proud to be the originator of the Red & Gray Playwright Festival, where students write, direct, and produce their own works at The High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in her hometown, Houston, TX. She featured in Windy City Times 2014's 30 Under 30 award with her wife Hannah Ii-Epstein as the first power couple to be honored together in this category. In the past few years, Anna Rose has begun dabbling in film. Anna Rose produced and was featured in Nothing Without a Company's short film Sweet, submitted to 2015's 48 Hour Film Fest Chicago, which won Best Film Runner Up, Best Directing, and Audience Award Group B Runner Up. Check her out as a featured extra in Signature Move, a queer movie coming out soon.

The show will be streamed live to an online audience only. Full COVID safety precautions will be adhered to by the entire production team. Kumu Kahua Theatre will not have in-person audiences until 2022.

Director Anna Rose Ii-Epstein is looking for actors to fill the following roles:

EMILY - She/Her- 20 something - Student at Chaminade, Major: Environmental Science -Originally from Butte, MT - An introvert/extrovert

AMANDA - She/Her/They/Them - 20 something - Student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Major: Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies - Originally from Skokie, IL - An extrovert - Sam's Girlfriend

SAM - She/Her- 20 something - Student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Major: Tax Accounting - Originally from Kona, HI - Masculine presenting - Amanda's Girlfriend

JOSEPH / BROSEPH - He/Him - 20 something - Student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, Major: Web Coding -Originally from Kona, HI and Salt Lake City, UT - Talks too much when nervous - Sam's

CHARACTER NOTES:

Emily and Amanda are similar in race and facial structure. Emily looks more and more like Amanda as the play progresses.

Any of the characters can be played by cisgender, transgender, or GNC actors.

Joseph is the only character who can be white presenting.
