STRANGER GRANDFATHER, STRANGER GRANDDAUGHTER - Theatrelab, 357 W 35th St

Cambria Kylinn Martin – Senior at Pace University studying Writing for Diversity and Equity in Theater and Media, and Film and Screen Studies – is seeking a collaborative team for her staged reading of her senior capstone, STRANGER GRANDFATHER, STRANGER GRANDDAUGHTER. Inspired by her award winning short play of the same name, it centers on Lynn when her 8-year-old classmate doesn't believe that she’s Mexican-American because she is white appearing. Through conversations with her monolingual mother and her bilingual father and 12 year-old brother, her and her family journey through self realization where Lynn must choose between assimilation or accepting her Mexican culture after her persistent denial of her language and culture in upscale Santa Monica, California.

Running Time: Projected 90 minutes with 30 minute Talk-Back

Number of Acts: 2 (w/ intermission)

Number of Scenes: 12

Stipend of $100 each.

Staged reading for May 17th (11am-12:30pm rehearsal and 1-3pm performance) at Theaterlab in the Atelier and May 11th 8pm Zoom rehearsal (additional Zoom rehearsal TBD), seeks to fill the following roles:

PAPÁ (ENRIQUE): Mid to late 40s*, darker, and looks Mexican. From Pegueros, MEX.

(He/Him) Married to MAMÁ. Colloquially bilingual.

JOSÉ: Late 50s*, Mexican gardener from Pegueros, MEX. A brother/father

(He/Him) figure for MAMÁ and padrino to CHASE. Bilingual.

*Flexible casting surrounding ages for stage reading purposes.
