Kumu Kahua Theatre Holds an Audition Workshop and Auditions

Open auditions will be held to cast the upcoming production of Shoyu on Rice by Scot Izuka at Kumu Kahua Theatre. The show will be directed by Reiko Ho.

There will be a free audition workshop held from 6:00-8:00 pm on Wednesday, June 18, 2014, also at Kumu Kahua Theatre. This workshop is an opportunity for all interested to work with the script and learn what the director is seeking for her interpretation of this script.

The Script:
In the mid-1980s, boys attending a Catholic all-boys high school deal with their use of pidgin English when a substitute teacher from Kansas takes over their classroom. Meanwhile, the substitute struggles to learn local ways in both the classroom and the home of her Japanese-American fiancé’s parents.

Rehearsals may begin as early as Monday, June 23; the show runs August 21 – September 21, 2014, with possible extension dates running through September 28, 2014.

Director, Reiko Ho is looking for 7 actors to play these roles:

THE BOYS (3) – Seniors at an all-boys Catholic high school in Hawaii. All were born and raised in Hawai'i: STAN ONO; DAVID DOMINGUES; MICHAEL LIU.

CATHY – Caucasian-American female, mid to late 20s. New English teacher at THE BOYS’ school. Recently moved to Hawai'i from Kansas with her Hawaii-born Japanese-American fiancée.

SARAH CHUN – Female, senior at a girls’ Catholic high school. Born and raised in Hawai'i.

MOM – Mother of CATHY’s fiancée, 2nd generation Japanese-American, late 40s to early 60s.

DAD – Father of CATHY’s fiancée, 2nd generation Japanese-American, late 40s to early 60s.

The workshop and auditions will be held at the Kumu Kahua Theatre, on the corner of Merchant and Bethel Streets. The entrance into Kumu Kahua Theatre is from the small park on the Merchant Street side. Auditions will consist of readings from the script, and some movement exercises. Please dress accordingly. Auditioners may come either day, but should come early and may be asked to stay for the whole time.

Scripts are available for loan with a $10 cash deposit at the Kumu Kahua Theatre office weekdays between 11am and 3pm–please call 536-4222 before coming to the theatre.
