Ooley Theatre Auditions

Upcoming Auditions for the Premiere of an Original Play in Sacramento!

About the Show:
Based on a true 'coming out green' story, TOKE is a socially conscious comedy-drama about Weedee, a big hearted Betty Crocker, soccer mom who crashes through the suburban Tupperware wall with the courage to admit she inhales. TOKE follows her adventures as a young woman of the '60s in what appears to be lighthearted fun, but as usual, there's something more looming behind Weedee's wild journey. Armed with the Pot Fairy as her chronic side-kick, Weedee's wild ride leaves husband and lovers, male and female, in the dust and her supercharged ride gets wild and furious touching on the issues of women, veterans benefits, sex, Arnold Schwarzenegger and more! Join Weedee as she takes her life into her own hands one toke at time.

Stockton Civic Theatre Auditions for Sweeney Todd

Stockton Civic Theatre announces auditions for SWEENEY TODD, THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET by Stephen Sondheim

Directed by Jim Coleman

When: April 8th and 9th, 2012, with callbacks on April 10 at 6:30PM

Where: Stockton Civic Theatre, 2312 Rosemarie Lane, Stockton, CA, 95207

This is Sondheim's masterpiece. A real musical thriller. The original stage version is nothing like the Tim Burton film, other than the basic story. There was lots of music cut from the film. The most important thing cut from the film was the fantastic chorus that informs the audience on so many things. This is a show for singers who act. The dancing is just musical staging. No dancing skills are needed. However, great voices are required.

All shapes and sizes welcome. This is not your typical chorus.

This show is intense, funny, moving, and above all, a love story. One of the greatest musical scores ever written for the musical theatre. Winner of 7 Tony Awards. There is a commercial DVD of the show with Angela Lansbury and George Hearn available from Amazon if you want to see the show.

Role Breakdowns:

Sweeney Todd: Legit baritone. 40-50. He has been sent to prison for a crime he didn't commit, and upon release he sets out to seek revenge on the people who killed his wife.

Mrs. Lovett: Belt and mezzo soprano. 40-50. Pie shop owner, who lures Todd into her life. She supplies most of the humor in the piece, but she is actually the villain. She needs to have great range musically as well as dramatically.

Tobias Rigg: Tenor. 20-30. Even though this character is a teen-ager, it is usually played by an adult because of the singing range, but mostly because of the depth of the character and the understanding of the very dark aspect of the character. If younger people wish to audition, they are welcome, but just know that it may go to an adult. The best person for the role will be cast.

Beggar Woman: Mezzo soprano. 30-40. Very intense role. She plays Sweeney's deranged wife.

Judge Turpin: 45-60. Bass. Great actor with a sense of humor.

Johanna: 20's. Soprano. Sweeney's daughter and the Judge's ward.

Anthony: 20's. Lyric Baritone. A sailor and Sweeney's friend. Love interest for Johanna

Pirelli: 30-50. Tenor. Must have a ringing high C. A barber. An opera buffo type.

Beadle: 30-50. Legit Tenor. A large man, the judge's right hand. Slimy. Must have high C.

Jonas Fogg: 30-50. Runs the asylum.

There are many smaller roles that are cast from the chorus. I sincerely hope that all of the great singers that we have in our community come out and audition. It will be a wonderful experience, and one that you won't soon forget. Such a great show for singers.

For the audition, I want to hear legitimate theatre ballads. No rock, pop, or Happy Birthday. Sing what shows your voice and range to it's best ability. This is very important.

For more information, please call the SCT business office at
209-473-2400.

Hope to see you there.

Anna in the Tropics is a poignant and poetic new play set in Florida in 1929 in a Cuban-American cigar factory, where cigars are still rolled by hand and "lectors" are employed to educate and entertain the workers. The arrival of a new lector is a cause for celebration, but when he begins to read aloud from Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners, for whom Tolstoy, the tropics and the American dream prove a volatile combination.
