MAMMA MIA! - Metropolis Performing Arts Centre

Metropolis Performing Arts Centre in downtown Arlington Heights, IL announces general auditions for Mamma Mia! (Summer 2020), music and lyrics by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, book by Catherine Johnson. Mamma Mia! will be directed by Krista Hansen, with choreography by Kristine Burdi, and musical direction by Ken McMullen. Seeking strong non-Equity adult actors/singers and actors/singers/dancers, age appropriate to the roles. Actors of diversity are strongly encouraged to audition. Gender-fluid casting available.

Audition Dates:

Friday, March 6, 2020 – 12:00pm-5:00pm

Sunday, March 8, 2020 – 10:00am-3:00pm

Monday, March 9, 2020 – 6:00pm-11:00pm

Audition slots will be individually assigned based on the closest available requested date(s)/time(s).

Callback Dates:

Wednesday, March 18, 2020 – 6:00pm-11:00pm

Materials to Prepare:

To be considered for Mamma Mia!, please prepare one comedic monologue and 16-32 bars of a song showing vocal range and characterization. Please do not sing an ABBA song. An accompanist will be provided; acapella accepted, but not preferred.

Mamma Mia! Description:

Mamma Mia! is the ultimate feel-good show—ABBA’s hit songs propel a mother, a daughter, three possible dads, two close friends, and an entire Greek island of quirky people through an enchanting tale of love and friendship.

Mamma Mia! Character Descriptions:

DONNA SHERIDAN—Mother to Sophie. Past lover of Sam, Harry, and Bill. Former lead singer of “Donna and the Dynamos” who now runs the Taverna on a Greek island. Strong and formidable, but with both zany and vulnerable sides. Female-Identifying; Age 45-50; Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano/Alto, Belter.

SOPHIE SHERIDAN—Daughter of Donna. Engaged to Sky. Free-spirited and dream chaser, determined to find the romance and happiness she thinks eluded her mother. Female-Identifying; Age 18-22; Vocal Range: Pop Soprano/Mezzo Soprano.

SAM CARMICHAEL—Past lover of Donna’s; left her 20 years ago because he was engaged to another woman. Possibly Sophie’s father. Charming, successful architect. Male-Identifying; Age 45-50; Vocal Range: Baritone.

HARRY BRIGHT—Past lover of Donna’s; formerly known as Harry Head-Banger, but he is now a banker. Possibly Sophie’s father. British, wealthy, conservative, but trying to reconnect with his freer, younger self. British dialect (RP) required. Male-Identifying; Age 45-50; Vocal Range: High Baritone/Tenor.

BILL AUSTIN—Past lover of Donna’s, now a travel writer. Possibly Sophie’s father. Free-spirited, good-natured, and always ready for adventure. Funny and boisterous. Male-Identifying; Age 45-50; Vocal Range: Baritone.

TANYA CRESHAM-LEIGH—One of Donna’s best friends and former member of “Donna and the Dynamos.” Recently divorced from her third husband and preparing for her fourth plastic surgery. Rich, sophisticated, acerbic, and witty. Female-Identifying; Age 40-50; Vocal Range: Mezzo Soprano/Alto, Belter.

ROSIE MULLIGAN—One of Donna’s best friends and former member of “Donna and the Dynamos.” Now runs and writes for a feminist press. Confident, strong, and funny on the outside, but shy underneath and uses humor as a defense mechanism; a bit of a clown. Exuberant energy, big choices, and good comedic timing necessary. Female-Identifying; Age 45-50; Vocal Range: Alto.

SKY—Sophie’s fiancé. Gave up a life as a successful young businessman in order to make over Donna’s tavern and marry Sophie. Athletic and sweet. Male-Identifying; Age 25-30; Vocal Range: Bari-Tenor.

LISA—Sophie’s friend/bridesmaid. Very energetic and lively. Preferably a strong dancer. Female-Identifying; Age 18-25; Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano.

ALI—Sophie’s friend/bridesmaid. Fun, but more refined. Preferably a strong dancer. Female-Identifying; Age 18-25; Vocal Range: Mezzo-Soprano.

PEPPER—Sky’s friend. Helps run the Taverna. Charming, always flirting. Preferably a strong dancer. Male-Identifying; Age 20-30; Vocal Range: Baritone or Tenor.

EDDIE— Sky’s friend. Works at the Taverna. Laid-back, easygoing. Preferably a strong dancer. Male-Identifying; Age 20-30; Vocal Range: Baritone or Tenor.

PASTOR (FATHER) ALEXANDRIOS—Wedding officiant. Any gender-identifying; Age 30+; Vocal Range: any vocal range.

ENSEMBLE—Actors must be exceptionally strong actors/singers who are strong dancers or move well. The ensemble plays a wide variety of roles, so we are seeking actors who are adept at creating multiple fully-realized, textured characters. All gender identifications encouraged; Ages 20-40; Vocal Ranges: from Bass to Tenor and Altos to Sopranos.

Mamma Mia! Production Dates:

Rehearsals – Monday May 18, 2020 – Monday, July 6, 2020: Weekly rehearsals include 7:00pm-10:00pm Mondays-Fridays, 1:00pm-5:00pm Saturdays, and 6:00pm-10:00pm Sundays. There is at least one designated evening off each week, selected at the director’s discretion. Understudy rehearsal Sunday 7/19, 6:00pm-10:00pm.

Tech Week – Tuesday, July 7, 2020 – Wednesday, July 15, 2020: Actors with tech week conflicts will not be under consideration. Schedule is as follows: Tuesday 7/7-Thursday 7/9, 6:00pm-11:00pm; Sunday 7/12, 1:00pm-11:00pm; Monday 7/13-Wednesday 7/15, 6:00pm-11:00pm; Thursday 7/16-Friday 7/17, 4:00pm-5:30pm TBA; there are no rehearsals Friday 7/10-Saturday 7/11.

Previews & Performances – Thursday, July 16, 2020 – Saturday, August 29, 2020: Standard performance schedule includes 7:30pm on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays; 3:00pm matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. There are no matinees on Saturday 7/25 and 8/15.
