Book, Music and Lyrics by Meredith Wilson

Directed by Charles Goolsby

Choreographed by Molly Gordon

Music Directed by Mary Baker

Wicked, funny, warm, romantic and touching, Meredith Wilson's 6 time Tony Award winning musical follows fast-talking salesman Harold Hill as he cons the people of River City into buying instruments and uniforms for a band he vows to organize despite not knowing a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian the librarian. Songs include Ya Got Trouble, 76 Trombones, and Til There Was You.

SHOWS: June 9-25

THE MUSIC MAN CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Harold Hill – the con man who comes to town to “start a band.” Charismatic, charming, fast talker.
Marian Paroo – daughter of Mrs. Paroo, sister to Winthrop. She is the librarian and piano teacher in town. She is very learned and defends the “questionable” books that are in the library.
Marcellus Washburn – a comic character who works in town and is dating Ethel Toffelmeir. He knows Harold from a long time ago and helps him out.
Mrs. Paroo – widowed, Irish, mother to Marian and Winthrop. Sweet homemaker who wants the best for everyone. Gives Marian a lot of advice about finding a man. Dotes on Winthrop.
Mayor Shinn – The Mayor of River City. Somewhat blustery, pompous. Gets a lot of words wrong! Listens to wife. Protective of daughter, Zaneeta, who he thinks is dating the wrong boy in town. Small-town politician.
Eulalie Shinn – Mayor Shinn’s wife. Definitely a society lady. Knows everyone in town. Struts like a peacock. Somewhat snooty. Member of every auxiliary organization in town. Has some strange ideas. Keeps husband in line.
Ethel Toffelmier – plays the player piano. Is jolly and friendly. She is dating Marcellus. She does gossip, however, with the other ladies in town.
Charlie Cowell – A traveling anvil salesman. First seen on train, he returns to town to warn about Harold and hopefully, make himself a hero and thus earn sales for himself.
Constable Locke – Town policeman. Always ready to do as instructed.
Conductor – Conductor on train. Very business like. Intent on collecting tickets and doing job. Does not sing.

Barbershop Quartet:

Members of the School Board who don’t get along with each other. However, once Harold gets them to sing with the others, they are inseparable and not only learn to sing in harmony but behave in harmony.
Olin Britt – Editor of the Gazette.
Oliver Hix – Married to Alma.
Ewart Dunlop – Married to Maud.
Jacey Squires – Married to Mrs. Squires.

Pick-a-Little Ladies:

Alma Hix – Wife to Oliver. Gossipy lady who is a buddy of Eulalie and other “hen/bird” women.
Maud Dunlop – Wife to Ewart. Gossipy lady who is a buddy of Eulalie and other “hen/bird” women.
Mrs. Squires – Wife to Jacey. Gossipy lady who is a buddy of Eulalie and other “hen/bird” women.
Eulalie Shinn – Mayor Shinn’s wife. Definitely a society lady. Knows everyone in town. Struts like a peacock. Somewhat snooty. Member of every auxiliary organization in town. Has some strange ideas. Keeps husband in line.

Teen Roles:

Zaneeta Shinn – Mayor’s & Eulalie’s daffy teenage daughter. Has a crush on the “bad” boy in town, Tommy.
Tommy Djilas – A teenager who has a crush on Zaneeta. Wants to do the right thing but is shunned by all because he comes from the “other” side of town so he is considered the “bad” boy in town. Harold befriends him.

Youth Roles:

Winthrop Paroo (8-12) – Marian’s lisping little brother. Does not talk because he misses his deceased father. Is a chatterbox by the end of the show.
Gracie Shinn (8-12) – Mayor’s and Eulalie’s younger daughter. Somewhat of a tomboy and a bit devilish.
Amaryllis (8-12) – Young piano student of Marian’s. Likes Winthrop.
