Fountain Hills Theater announces auditions for the musical Million Dollar Quartet

Million Dollar Quartet is set on December 4, 1956, when an extraordinary twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions ever. Million Dollar Quartet brings that legendary December night to life with an irresistible tale of broken promises, secrets, betrayal and celebrations that is both poignant and funny.

Relive the era with the smash-hit sensation featuring an incredible score of rock ‘n’ roll, gospel, R&B and country hits, performed live onstage by world-class actors and musicians. Showcased hit songs include “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Fever,” “Walk the Line,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Who Do You Love?,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On,” “Hound Dog,” and more.

Million Dollar Quartet is directed by Peter J. Hill, choreographed by Savannah Grottenthaler and musically directed by Jay Melberg.

Million Dollar Quartet will play April 17 -May 3, with possible extension dates until May 10.

Auditions will be held Sunday, March, 8 @ 6:00pm and Tuesday, March, 10 @ 7:00pm. Callbacks, if required, will be Wednesday, March. 11 @ 7:00pm.

Auditioners are asked sing 16-32 bars of a song of the style that also that best shows off their voice and range. An accompanist is provided. No recorded accompaniment, please. Please dress to dance. Please see character descriptions for specific audition requirements for each character.

Casting for:

Elvis (Lead): Male, appears18-35

Actor/singer/guitar player to portray Elvis in his 20s at the beginning of his career; must be familiar with his music and be able to play basic guitar; should sound and look somewhat like Elvis without being an “impersonator”; songs include “Memories Are Made Of This”, “That’s All Right”, “Long Tall Sally”, “Peace In The Valley”, “Party”, “Hound Dog”; accompany yourself on guitar to That's Alright Mama and Peace In The Valley or any other Elvis song of your choosing; bring your own acoustic guitar.

Jerry Lee Lewis (Lead): Male, appears 18-34

Actor/singer/pianist; he was rock & roll’s legendary piano prodigy and celebrated “Last Man Standing; must be a superb piano player, able to play like Jerry Lee Lewis; fun, energetic; comic skills a plus. Songs include “Real Wild Child”, “Great Balls Of Fire”, “Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On”; accompany yourself on piano to Great Balls Of Fire and Whole Lotta Shakin, or another song of your choosing; a piano will be provided.

Carl Perkins (Lead): Male, appears 18-33

Actor/singer/guitar player (lead guitar); he was the American pioneer of rockabilly music and best known for his song “Blue Suede Shoes”; must be an excellent lead guitarist. Songs include “Matchbox”, “Who Do You Love?”, “My Babe”, “See You Later, Alligator”; accompany yourself on guitar to Blue Suede Shoes and Matchbox, or a rockabilly tune of your choosing; bring your own electric guitar and amp.

Johnny Cash (Lead): Male, appears 18-35

Actor/singer/guitar player to portray Johnny Cash at the dawn of his epic career; must be familiar with his music and be able to play guitar; tall; should sound and look somewhat like Johnny without being an “impersonator”. Songs include “Folsom Prison Blues”, “Sixteen Tons”, “I Walk The Line”, “Riders In The Sky”. please accompany yourself on guitar to Folsom Prison Blues (the show’s version of 16 Tons) or any other Cash song of your choosing; bring your own acoustic guitar.

Sam Phillips (Lead): Male, appears 30-40

Father of Rock’n’Roll and founder of Sun Records who discovered Elvis, Johnny, Jerry, Carl, and many others including Roy Orbison and B.B. King; a charismatic figure in American music; must have a strong stage presence and ability to command an audience.

Dyanne (Lead): Female, appears 18-30

She was an aspiring singer and Elvis’s girlfriend; attractive, great singer with a wide range; sings solos and back-ups through the show; sings “Fever” in her alto range and covers the high soprano part (3 “Gs” above middle “C”) of “Riders In The Sky” (Johnny Cash song); also sings “I Hear You Knockin.”

Jay Perkins (bass player/singer) Male, appears 25- 35. Must be able to play the stand up bass very theatrically.

W.S. “Fluke” Holland (drummer) Male, appears 18-40

ABOUT FOUNTAIN HILLS THEATER

Fountain Hills Theater presents 3 regularly scheduled seasons of productions in their two theaters. The Theater’s year-round offering includes Mainstage, Mainstage Too!, and Youth productions. Additionally, special events, community outreach, and educational arts programming for our youth is also offered. The Mainstage (often called the “big”) theater seats 130 and is devoted to medium and large-scale popular musicals and plays including the best of Broadway and Off-Broadway. No seat is more than 35 feet from the stage. The Youth/Mainstage Too! (also called the “little” theater) is a smaller, more intimate 90-seat, thrust style auditorium that offers thought-provoking, inspiring and sometimes challenging productions including Broadway musicals, original plays, musicals, and art works. Most of the youth productions are performed in the more intimate, smaller theater. Both stages often run productions concurrently. Special events are offered throughout the season on both stages as well as in community centers. The Theater has been in operation as a professionally-directed community theater for over 30 years. The Mission of Fountain Hills Theater is “to engage, inspire and entertain diverse audiences, train and support our youth, and celebrate the essential power of the performing arts.” Fountain Hills Theater is a 501(c)(3) organization.
