MAD HORSE THEATRE COMPANY 36TH SEASON - Mad Horse Theatre Company

Mad Horse Theatre Company is hiring directors for two main stage productions for our 36th Season, Waiting for Alice (February 3-27, 2022) by Allison McCall and Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties (April 28-May 22, 2022) by Jen Silverman.

Directors are responsible for the vision of the production and bringing these plays to life. Director's responsibilities include coordinating the rehearsal schedule with the Mad Horse Theatre Management team, attending all rehearsals, production meetings, and strike.

Brief Synopsis of Waiting for Alice

Waiting for Alice explores the question: what happens at the Mad Tea Party before Alice arrives...or does she ever? The Mad Hatter, March Hare, and Dormouse are occasionally joined by the Cheshire Cat while they entertain themselves around their tea table, forever stuck at 6 o'clock. Originally written for PortFringe 2015, the initial idea was inspired by conversations with young actors during rehearsals for Alice in Wonderland at the Children's Museum and Theatre of Maine. Waiting for Alice delves into the urgency behind rituals and investigates Carroll's Wonderland through an absurdist lens inspired by Beckett and Ionesco.

Brief Synopsis of Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties; In essence, a queer and occasionally hazardous exploration; do you remember when you were in middle school and you read about shackleton and how he explored the Antarctic?; Imagine the Antarctic as a pussy and it's sort of like that (Yes, this is the full title of the play.)

Betty is rich. Betty is lonely. Betty’s a dutiful wife, but Betty’s busy working on her truck. Betty wants to talk about love, and Betty wants Betty, but Betty needs to hit something. And Betty keeps using a small hand mirror to stare into parts of herself she’s never examined. Meanwhile, Betty decides to stage a production of that play-within-a-play from…what’s it called? Summer’s Midnight Dream?

In Collective Rage: A Play in 5 Betties, five different women named Betty collide at the intersection of anger, sex, and the “thea-tah.” Award-winning playwright Jen Silverman’s absurdist romantic comedy is an uncompromising working-over of well-worn tropes about female identity.
