Auditions for Lord of the Flies, based on the book by William Golding, will be held at the Des Moines Community Playhouse at 6:00 PM, Sunday, June 30. All auditions are open to the public; no one is pre-cast. Lord of the Flies is being produced by Adolescent Anarchy.

Lord of the Flies contains roles for 12-20 boys and girls, ages 9-16. No preparation is necessary, but those auditioning are encouraged to wear clothing that allows them to move easily. While the cast will use British accents, actors will not need to audition with an accent. Performances are Aug. 23-31. Lord of the Flies is directed by Sam Bates-Norum and Halen Becker.

A pre-audition workshop for Lord of the Flies will be held at the Playhouse at 3:00-5:00 PM, Saturday, June 15. The workshop will be led by members of Adolescent Anarchy, producers of Lord of the Flies.

At these pre-auditions, interested actors will:

  • Meet the production team
  • Talk about the deeper meaning behind Lord of the Flies
  • Review audition etiquette
  • Have a mock audition with constructive feedback from directors

It is recommended that actors intending to audition for Lord of the Flies attend the workshop, but it is not required.

Lord of the Flies by William Golding is an allegorical novel, analyzing how society is directly affected by the actions and judgment of man. It follows a group of young, abandoned boys on a deserted island and their inner battle between good and evil.

Adolescent Anarchy is a newly-formed group of 10 dedicated high school students with high standards and a great passion for theatre. Their mission: to build a foundation of involvement for teens in the theatre by giving them complete creative control to develop a fully-realized, successful production. Adolescent Anarchy is breaking the boundaries of traditional theatre and innovating the way theatre is viewed and produced by allowing teens to administer and operate projects. Adolescent Anarchy members, with mentoring from Playhouse professional staff, are responsible for every aspect of production: script, cast, direction, scenic design, costume design, finances, promotion, and ticket sales.

The Playhouse is Iowa's oldest and largest producing theatre. Located at the 42nd Street exit of I-235, the theatre has presented a full season of shows since 1919 and also offers a wide variety of educational experiences including classes for ages 4 to adult, theatre trips to New York, and volunteer opportunities onstage and backstage.
