JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH - Harbor Playhouse Theater

Synopsis:

Most of us know the story of James from Roald Dahl’s beloved novel. Now the adventures inside the giant peach are onstage! Featuring an exceptional music score from the same team as Dear Evan Hansen and The Greatest Showman, this show will be an artistic endeavor for everyone onstage and a delight for every audience member!

When James’s parents are tragically trampled by a rhino, he is forced to live with his only two remaining family members: his aunts, Spiker and Sponge. With the help of our narrator Ladahlord, James creates a magic potion that creates a giant peach. When James has had enough of his aunt’s awful attitudes, he finds himself floating in the giant peach with five human-sized bugs. Eventually, they learn how to work and live together, giving James the family he never thought he’d have.

AUDITION FORM

Auditions are open to ages 9+. James is the only child character in the show, the rest of the cast will be ages 14+.

Attire: Dress comfortably as you will be dancing. Bring jazz or character shoes if you have them. If not, comfortable closed-toe shoes will do. Avoid wearing costumes and excessive jewelry.

Auditions will consist of singing, a prepared reading from the script, and dancing.

Vocal Auditions:

The sheet music, karaoke tracks, and cuts from the soundtrack can all be found in the
Google drive. All auditioners will warm up together and will have a chance to sing their selection with a group before performing solo. Memorizing your selected audition song is heavily encouraged. Practice, and don't forget to act it out!

If you are auditioning for James, please sing Middle of a Moment. Both boys and girls ages 9-16 are welcome to audition for this role. Teen males (ages 13-16) may sing the selection down the octive.

If you're auditioning for Spiker or Sponge, please sing I Got You.

If you're auditioning for Ladahlord, Centipede, Grasshopper, Earthworm, or Male Chorus, please sing Right Before your Eyes.

If you're auditioning for Ladybug, Spider, or Female Chorus, please sing Everywhere That You Are.

Monologue Readings:

All characters must read their lines in a British accent. We ask that everyone (including those auditioning only for chorus) prepare one of the monologues in the
Google drive and give their best shot at the accent. Don't worry if you're not great at it, this is just to observe how you practice and prepare on your own. Performing the monologue memorized is heavily encouraged.

Dance Audition:

The choreographer will teach you a small section of choreography from the show. Please bring proper dance attire and shoes. Also, please try to stretch beforehand so you are ready to dance.

Characters:

James Trotter (age 9-16): The main character of our show - he is kind, resourceful, and incredibly clever. He is lonely, wondering if he will ever have a family again after losing his parents. His quick and smart thinking brings him and the bugs out of trouble…. and closer together.

Ladahlord (age 18+): The narrator of our show and a magician. He introduces the audience into the story, plays multiple characters, and guides James through his journey. The maker of potions, he reveals his true identity at the end of the show.

Spiker & Sponge (ages 18+): James’s aunts. They are rude, loud, hilarious, and always running from trouble.

Ladybug (age 16+): An elegant bug who ends up married to grasshopper at the end. She acts much like a mother to James.

Spider (age 16+): A kind and slightly mischievous character who deeply cares for her new bug family.

Grasshopper (age 16+): The leader of the pack and a father figure to James.

Earthworm (age 16+): Terrified of everything, Earthworm ends up overcoming his fear by tempting a group of seagulls to save the peach.

Centipede (age 16+): He has been badly burned by humans, so naturally he thinks they are all bad. He spends most of the show resenting James, until he eventually realizes that maybe not all humans are awful.

Ensemble (age 14+): The ensemble will consist of both a dance core and general chorus. Dance core will have many high-level dances, and our ensemble will have the opportunity to play a variety of small roles (Cops, Matron Nurse, James’s Mom and Dad, Sea Captain, Reporters).
