HIGH SCHOOL SHAKESPEARE IMMERSION PROJECT 2016 - Stratford Shakespeare Festival

Stratford Shakespeare Festival

High School Shakespeare Immersion Project 2016

This fall, thirty carefully selected high school students from Lansing area schools will be invited to spend an entire week immersed in Shakespeare with the extraordinary actor/teaching artists from the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. This is a rare and unique opportunity for selected students to gain tremendous insight into Shakespeare by working on the plays themselves with members of the best classical theatre company in North America. The project has been an enormous success, from the viewpoint of the Institute, student, teacher and the Stratford staff.

Sunday, October 23 through Friday, October 28, 2016, from 12:30pm to 6:00pm each day, students will come to Wharton Center and study Shakespeare in depth. Activities will focus on text analysis, exploring the language and examining character, as well as participating in a variety of theatre activities and movement exercises designed to enhance the learning experience. Students will also be asked to keep journals and engage in reflective writing. The week will culminate on Saturday with Shakespearean scenes and soliloquies performed on a Wharton Center stage by the students for family, friends and school officials. Students who successfully complete the week will also be invited to attend a Shakespeare performance at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada in the spring of 2017. Tickets and bus transportation are provided by the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in support of this program.

While students are required to provide their own transportation to Wharton Center each day—there is no charge to either the student or school for the students’ participation. Snacks and beverages are provided during the day. Admission to the Friday night event is free.
