NextStage Theatre Company is accepting online audition submissions for their upcoming production of Dulce Desesperacion. Deadline for submissions is Thursday, August 20th, 2020 – seeking Latinx actors who speak fluent Spanish. The show is a bilingual production and will be directed by Hugo Carbajal. Performance date is Wednesday, September 9th, 2020 in the evening (not in-person – online only).
“If you were to ask us for one word to describe our experiences as latinos, escucharían: Dolor. Sufrimiento. Raza. Oportunidad. Familia. Fe. Valor. Amor. Pobreza.” Inspired by August Wilson’s “Fences,” this drama tackles the familial dynamic of the Hernandez family. Through the tragedy of disconnect, they are left to pick up the pieces and rediscover what it means to deal with the crossroads of change and acceptance.

AVAILABLE ROLES
PEDRO HERNANDE, 50’s, serious and always has a point to make. It is clear life has worn on him. He is the father of the three brothers and Adelita. Husband to Rosa.
ROSA HERNANDEZ, Late 40’s, a beautiful and mature spirit. She is a pleaser and always tries to keep the peace in the household. She is mother to the three brothers and Adelita.
ALEJANDRO HERNANDEZ, Mid 20’s, tender, hardworking, and driven. He is the closest to Adelita, and is her caretaker.
ARTURO HERNANDEZ, Early 30’s, serious and intimidating at first glance. The hard worker. He is the oldest of the four siblings.
MANUEL HERNANDE, Late 20’s, the second oldest of the siblings. He has a good sense of humor, loves to eat, but can also be assertive when needed.
ADELITA HERNANDEZ, 8-10 years old (Grown Adelita, 19 years), the youngest of the Hernandez family. Sweet and intuitive. Although she is young, she is very aware of her surroundings and the world.
PALOMA, Same age as Alejandro. Attractive, more than meets the eye. Daughter of Don?a Pancha. She lives in the barrio and grew up with the Hernandez boys.
SENIOR SANTIAGO, 50-60’s, upper class, familiar with the Hernandez family, and a regular at the taller. A man of business.
COMPENSATION
All our actors will be paid through the NextStage actor tip jar. This is an account that has been set up so anyone can donate and the proceeds are divided evenly at the end of the production. NextStage has had great success with this system when they used it for previous productions.
REHEARSALS
The rehearsal schedule will be determined based on artist availability. Please submit accurate conflicts. Since this production is a workshop reading, rehearsals will not be as rigorous as if it were a full show.
PERFORMANCE
NextStage’s Virtual Studio uses state of the art recording and live broadcast software. There will be no in-person rehearsals or performances. The performance is scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, September 9th, 2020 and held online. You must be available on the performance date in order to be considered.
