Open auditions will be held to cast the World Premiere of Darrell H.Y. Lum?s Da Beer Can Hat. The show will be directed by Denny & Karen Hironaga and runs May 23 - June 23, 2019.

Bobo is a little slow. His abusive father wants to send him away. Selling newspapers on the street, Bobo scrounges for a little money. Despite injuries, harassment, and discrimination, Bobo never complains—after all, he may not have much—but Bobo does have one thing: a true friend. Da Beer Can Hat is based on Darrell Lum’s original short story of a mentally handicapped individual and his one, best friend.

Directors Denny & Karen Hironaga are looking for actors to fill the following roles.

Bobo - Male, 15 years old, local (or able to play younger)

Junior - Male, 12-15 years, local (or able to play younger)

Benson Ah Hung Ching - Male adult, 40s+ , Asian or Asian mix

Sonny Lopez (Bobo's Father) - Male adult, local

Joe-Boy - Male, 15+ years old, or able to play younger, leader of the mokes

Father (Junior's Father) - Male adult 30s+

Mother (Junior's Mother) - Female adult 30s+

Moke 1 - Male, 15+ years old, or able to play younger, Joe-Boy's Gang

Moke 2 - Male, 15+ years old, or able to play younger, Joe-Boy's Gang

Social Worker/ensemble - Female adult

Tattoo/ensemble - Male adult, carnival patron

Carnival Worker/ensemble - Male or female adult, carnival worker

Kid/ensemble - Male or female, 10 years old, sweetbread seller

Mr. Kim, ensemble - Male adult

Customer/ensemble - Male or Female adult


All actors should be familiar with the story which can be found
here. Please note there are two opportunities to audition, Saturday, March 23rd from 1-4pm or Wednesday, March 27th from 6-9p. Actors do not need to come to both audtions. The directors ask that you arrive promptly at the start time of auditions.

Audition Information:

Printed scripts are available for loan with a $10 cash deposit at the Kumu Kahua Theatre office weekdays between 11am and 3pm. Please call 808-536-4222 before coming to the theatre. Electronic scripts for all 48th Season Kumu Kahua productions can be found
here. Auditions will consist of readings from the script.
