SANTA PAULA THEATER CENTER HOLDS AUDITIONS FOR

HARVEY FIERSTEIN’S “CASA VALENTINA”

The Santa Paula Theater Center announces auditions for Harvey Fierstein’s touching comedy drama CASA VALENTINA on Tuesday, April 30th and Thursday, May 2nd from 7 – 9 pm at the Santa Paula Theater Center, 125 South 7th Street in Santa Paula. Invited callbacks will be on Monday, May 6th at 7 pm at the theater. CASA VALENTINA performances will be from June 21 – July 28, 2019 on Friday and Saturday evening at 8 pm and Sunday matinees at 2:30 pm. This is a Non-Equity production. There is NO PAY.

This production will be directed by Fred Helsel. Actors will be asked to do cold readings from the script. No appointments are necessary. Questions regarding the play or preparation for auditions may be asked directly to the director, Fred Helsel, at
frhelsel@gmail.com. No conflicts allowed for performances or for tech week (the week preceding opening). All roles open except for the role of Amy/Judge.

In June of 1962, nestled in the Catskills, an inconspicuous bungalow colony catered to a very special clientele: heterosexual men who delighted in dressing and acting as women. These white-collar professionals would discreetly escape their families to spend their weekends safely inhabiting their chosen female alter-egos. But given the opportunity to share their secret lives with the world, the members of this sorority had to decide whether the freedom gained by openness was worth the risk of personal ruin. Based on real events and infused with Fierstein's trademark wit, this moving, insightful, and delightfully entertaining work offers a glimpse into the lives of a group of 'self-made women' as they search for acceptance and happiness in their very own Garden of Eden.

SPTC is looking for 8 actors, 6 male and 2 female for CASA VALENTINA. Available roles include: Jonathan/Miranda (Supporting): Male, 25-35: masculine, shy, and bookish. Overly polite and cautious as a male. As a female, she is ebullient. Appears in and out of drag; Albert/Bessie (Supporting): Male, 50-59: chubby. Willy Loman by day, Ethel Mertz at night. Quick-witted and friendly. Unaffectedly feminine. Appears in drag only; George/Valentina (Supporting): Male, 40-49: married to Rita. An insurance-salesman type as a man. Assured and charming as a woman. Appears in and out of drag; Isadore/Charlotte (Supporting): Male, 50-59: the ultimate WASP. A buttoned-down, strict disciplinarian. Not your favorite aunt. Appears in drag only; Michael/Gloria (Supporting): Male, 30-39: a very handsome and sexually-charged chap who is accustomed to compliments, whether dressed as a male or female. Appears in drag only; Theodore/Terry(Supporting): Male, 70-79: sweet and gentle and slightly silly, like a favorite old auntie. Appears in drag only; Rita (Supporting): Female, 50-59: a resigned, determined but worn earth-mother. Her love of the girls barely covers her inner sadness; Eleanor (Supporting): Female, 45-55: the Judge's daughter. Brittle, cold, and damaged.

SPTC continues their 2019 season with Harvey Fierstein’s CASA VALENTINA from June 21 – July 28, Edward Albee’s SEASCAPE from August 30 – October 6, and Neil Simon’s LOST IN YONKERS from November 8 – December 15. Tickets are available at
